A large crowd of soldiers and officers group together to be photographed. A few hardy souls kneel in the snow at the front of the group.

Twelve officers and NCOs stand in a group. Snow lies thickly on the ground, and behind them are looped and tangled lines of snow-covered barbed wire.

A German officer stands at the foot of a short flight of stairs leading down to a sturdy wooden cabin.

A view along a wide, curving, concrete-walled trench, roofed with camouflage netting. A group of men stand in the middle distance, two of them carrying a stretcher bearing a sick or wounded soldier.

About 20 soldiers grouped together in a muddy trench, posing proudly for the camera.
