In 1856 Edwin Foden, aged 15, became an apprentice with the firm of Plant and Hancock in Elworth and in 1876 the firm was named Edwin Foden & Son. It was restructured in 1902 to become Fodens Ltd. and a major contributor to Britain's industrial heritage.
Although Fodens Ltd. ceased to trade in 1980 the name lives on in Foden Trucks as the business was acquired by a major american company.
More of the firm's history and development can be found on the web site of The Foden Society, which caters for both steam and diesel enthusiasts.
For the steam enthusiast, the name Foden brings to mind the range of overtype wagons for which the company had a deservedly high reputation in the earlier years of this century.
However Traction Engines were built for some years before the first wagon was produced, commencing around 1880. Foden's design for a compound engine won a gold medal at the Royal Agricultural Society Trials in 1887.
Seven Foden Traction Engines are in preservation in Britain, and the three oldest can be viewed from the links in the table on the right.

In the 1920s Foden, along with Sentinel and Mann, experimented with 'one-off' steam buses. The well known Foden Works Band was carried to venues in a steam bus called Puffing Billy. Sadly the original was not preserved, but in the 1960s the last steam bus to be built in Britain was constructed by an enthusiast from Norfolk. G. E. Milligen used a vintage Foden wagon chassis to recreate the lost bus.
In the glamour stakes Fodens were not a major contributor; only ten showman's road locomotives were built, and of these only one survives. Some Foden tractors were converted to showman's specification during their working lives and, according to records, one of these survives. There is also a Foden tractor carrying showman's fittings, which were possibly added in the course of preservation.
At the onset of World War I the War Dept. commandeered the whole output of the Foden 5 tonners. These wagons left the Sandbach factory by the trainload and were transported to France for the British Army. Although many returned and were sold off as surplus, some remained to work in France. One of these has been brought back and can be seen at steam rallies.
