The church and manor house form a small oasis in what has now become a suburban area on the edge of Grimsby and Cleethorpes. A monument to Matthew Humberston, 'born in London, who by diligence and application early advanced to several places of trust and profit in the custom house' tells how the simple brick nave was built for £1000. A tablet in the wall outside, beneath the east window, commemorates 'Mr John Nash - late of London, master carpenter of this church who departed this life Februery ye 14th 1720/21 Aaetatis Suae 72'. Matthew Humberston's armorial bearings, a hatchment, the royal arms and the front date from this period. The tower is 15th century. There are a few traces of St Mary's Abbey which stood on this site until the dissolution. | ||
