Gateshead Senators are welcoming back some old hands and some young blood for their 1996 campaign. Senators' Chairman Gary Marshall, who doubles as BAFA Development Officer as well as Great Britain Crusaders coach, is happy to have Craig Buttery as a valued addition to the Senators coaching staff. Craig, who last year was with Stockton Gators, coaches with Gary Marshall for the Crusaders, so the two are used to working together. "It's nice to have Craig back on board with the Senators," said Gary.
Also joining the Senators coaching staff from Stockton is Andy Smith, a defensive coach, who will travel from Sheffield to join the Gateshead club. A former Senator player, Dave Annandale, completes the trio of coaching recruits for the Senators.
The influx does not stop there though. Several players from Stockton are also joining the Geordies, and there are new players from the youth team and Newcastle University's Mariners who are now eligible for the BAFA Senior League Division Two Senators.
Most of last year's squad are expected back, including yet again the veteran defensive end, Ray "Jurassic" Butters, so the imposing 6ft 5 inch #99 will once more be a threat to opposing offenses in 96!
And some of those opposing teams will be familiar, others new to the division conference. Teams the Senators can expect to meet include Nottingham Caesars, West Bromich Vipers, Trent valley Warriors, Staffordshire Surge and South Yorkshire Rams. Home games will be played at Gateshead International Stadium.
The Senators will open with a pre-season friendly at home on March 3rd against Winchester Rifles.

Gateshead International Senators, the North East's top American football team, are ready for their new season which starts with a home game at Gateshead stadium against Nottingham next Sunday, April 28th. The Tyneside team finished last season well, just missing out on a playoff spot for promotion to Division One.
There has been an influx of new players, including experienced veterans from Stockton Gators, as well as new coaching help from the same source. Long time stalwarts John "Rapper" Lockhart and Trevor "Hands'n'Eyes" Atkinson have dropped to the division three Presidents, but fresh young legs have moved to fill in. Lee "Fridge" Fraser will start again at quarterback, and head coach Gary Marshall says that with the team's new fast receivers and strong backfield, they should be able to keep opposing defences guessing. New blood as well as the return of experienced veterans promise a strong defence, a Senators tradition. Special teams work has been a feature of pre-season training, and Coach Marshall is expecting good results in that area. As usual, he will be undertaking kicking and punting duties himself.
Commenting on the Senators' pre-season form, Coach Marshall said, "We have had some good scrimmages with other teams, especially our local friends and rivals the Presidents, as well as Strathclyde. Overall, we scored ten touchdowns, and had one scored against us, so while it's not the same as a game situation, we feel confident about the season, and the lads are in an upbeat mood."
Touchback!
Two 9 yard keeper TD runs by Nottingham quarterback Gary Stainton were enough for them to defeat the Senators at Gateshead on Sunday. The first came on a Senators' punt when the snap passed over punter Gary Marshall's head to be recovered by the grateful Caesars in excellent field position. Despite having two attempts because of a penalty however, Nottingham could not convert and the score remained 6-0.
The game reverted to an increasingly frustrating exchange of punts, the only scoring opportunity of the second quarter being a 27 yard field goal attempt by Marshall which went wide right, giving Nottingham's small squad the half-time lead.
The second half opened in style with a Senators' touchdown from John Hartley, who returned the opening kick-off 75 yards for the Senators' six points. The conversion failed, leaving the scores level. Later in the third quarter, Stainton again ran in from nine yards for the score that was to give the Caesars victory. Senators' hopes were raised in the fourth quarter when Ian Storey intercepted Stainton with a huge return, only to have the yardage cancelled by penalties, and the Senators could not capitalise on the possession.
Nottingham Head Coach Albert Thompson said, "We won, but it was extremely hard work. We brought a small squad, but we played as team. There seemed to be bickering on the Senators sideline and it affected the lads."
Gateshead Coach Marshall said, "We did some good things, but we should have won it. We failed to execute some key plays, and we will be addressing this in training."

The Senators scraped to their first win of the season with a 2 point victory over Yorkshire Rams, and had to fight all the way for it. The Rams' scored first with a 6 yard TD pass by Mick Jones to Gary Bailey. Steve Shepherd's PAT was good to give the Yorkshiremen a 7 point lead. The Senators hit straight back with a Lee Fraser 12 yard scoring pass to Mashalla Mokhtari, followed by Gary Marshall's kick for extra point to tie the score. After an exchange of interceptions, Steve Wootton caught Ram's Paul Appleton in the endzone for the 2 point safety to end the quarter.
The second period started with a scoring romp by Gateshead with a 4 yard run from John Savage, and a 6 yard score from Mick Thompson, both converted by Marshall's boot to give the Senators a 23-7 advantage. As the quarter ended, the Senators started to throw away their lead with penalties, leading to a 40 yard scoring bomb from Mick Jones to Gary Bailey closing the gap to 10 points, and then with one second left in the half, the same combination from 12 yards reduced it to 4 points. A fake PAT kick turned into a 2 point conversion, to leave only Wootton's safety as the difference at the half.
In the third, Fraser and Mokhtari combined from 18 yards out, but Marshall's kick was blocked, leaving an 8 point lead going into the final quarter. Gateshead again drew more losses from yellow flags, which the Rams capitalised on when Jones passed to Darren Kennett for an 11 yard score. A 2 point run was stopped. Back at a 2 point margin with a 27-29 score, the Senators clung to their lead to the nail biting end.
At post game presentations in the Bluebell, Gateshead High Street, Gary Bailey and Darren Kennett took the offensive and defensive MVP awards for the Rams, with Mashallah Mokhtari and Peter Gannon doing so for the Senators.
Touchback!
The Senators moved to 2-1 in a hard fought game played in steady drizzle which made ball handling difficult. Senators offensive MVP Duncan French (12 carries for 84 yards) was first to score with a 10 yard run, and Gary Marshall's PAT was good for the extra point to give the home team a 7 point lead.
Lancashire struck back when John Iddon's 43 yard bomb to Steve Ford put the Wolverines on the Senators' 8 yard line, and one play later, Iddon took the ball over himself from 3 yards. Dave Herd's kick was good to tie the scores at the end of the first quarter. In the second period, the teams traded punts and interceptions, but there was no further scoring.
In the third, Lee Fraser, who was 15 of 18 for 168 yards, 2 TDs and 1 interception on the day, scored the first of those with an 18 yard throw to John Hartley in the endzone, and Marshall's PAT made it 14-7. The Senators put the game away four minutes from the end with Fraser's 8 yard toss to Mashallah Mokhtari, with Marshall again adding the conversion to bring the score to 21-7.
At the Bluebell, Gateshead High Street, MVP awards also went to Sean Riley for Senators' defense, and John Iddon and Mark Sloan for Wolverines' offense and defense.
The Senators play away for two weeks, but return to the International Stadium on June 2nd to host the Birmingham Bulls.
Touchback!
19 May, 1996
The Senators travelled to Birmingham for what was always expected to be their toughest clash of the season, in this, their first away game. The constant rain cut down on the Senators passing, and with starting centre Kev Elgy out with a shoulder injury, quarterback Lee Fraser was unable to repeat his passing success of last week. Special teams were also a problem for the Senators, not made easier with the absence from the field, again with injury, of stalwart kicker and punter Gary Marshall. Backup kicker/punter John Savage had an injured ankle, creating real problems.
With many players out of their regular positions, Gateshead suffered from poor execution of practised plays, and Birmingham took full advantage to demonstrate their power, giving the Senators their first shutout defeat of the season.
Offensive MVP for Gateshead was Duncan French again, and game MVP was Steve Wooton.
The Senators, now 2-2, are on the road again next week, and will be seeking to restore their pride by getting revenge at Nottingham for the defeat the Caesars gave the Senators in the opening game.

26 May, 1996
The Gateshead Senators are making full use of their postponed game against Nottingham, due to have been played away on Bank Holiday Sunday, to recover from their mauling by Birmingham Bulls the week before and prepare for the return fixture at the International Stadium next Sunday.
Several key players were injured, either before or during the game at Birmingham, and the fortnight break is giving the team the chance to get back to top fitness and prepare for the rematch. Special teams play was a particularly vulnerable area for the weakened Gateshead team, and at least three of Birmingham's scores can be directly attributed to mistakes by the Senators in this area with bad snaps and mishandled balls. The Gateshead defense showed promise though, and the Senators will be looking to work o their strengths to contain the Bulls on their home turf.
There has been speculation that Birmingham should have been placed in the small Division One this season, and last week's result gave the so far perfect Bulls no cause to disagree. Whilst they are a dominant force in Division Two North, not everybody thinks they are invincible.
Senators Head Coach Gary Marshall said, "Birmingham are obviously a strong team, but there is no way they're forty points better than us. We shot ourselves in the foot, literally because due to injuries, our special teams and the kicking game handed them 23 of those points on a plate. Our unexpected week off has been put to good effect, and we are looking forward to welcoming the Bulls to Gateshead next Sunday."

The Bulls did the double on the Senators at Gateshead on Sunday, but by a far smaller margin that at their Birmingham meeting. The game started 34 minutes late because Birmingham were still in the changing room, thus drawing the first of many penalties even before the kick off. The game was played in 12 minute quarters because of the late start.
The Senators got off to a good start with a defensive display that had the Bulls punting on 4th and 27, and the resulting drive was capped by Michael Rumney's 19 yard run to put Gateshead on the board first, ensuring no repeat of the previous shutout. After a failed 2pt conversion, Gary Marshall's kick off resulted in the first of three touchbacks he achieved. The Bulls hit back with a long pass from Tim Spall to Angus Monkford, who had the ball tipped away by an alert Alan Ellis for the Senators, only for it fall into Monkford's arms again, who as surprised as anyone at this good fortune, gratefully took it to the endzone, levelling the scores. An interception by Senators' Kev Storey led to a Kev Ramsay catch in the endzone from Lee Fraser's pass., only for it to be called back for holding.
This was to be the last time the Senators got to the endzone, despite being inside the twenty on most drives, but in the red zone, the Bulls' defense stood firm, including a dramatic four down goal-line stand on the one in the third quarter.
Matt Scott put the Bulls further up with a 4 yard dash, followed by Andy Raffo's PAT, which he repeated later after Alex Scott had a 24 yard scoring run .
In the fourth, the Senators came close again, but Fraser's pass was picked off in the endzone by Richard Szostecki. The scoring was completed with Matt Scott's 20 yard catch and another Raffo PAT.
At the Bluebell in Gateshead after the game, Senator MVP awards were announced for Michael Rumney on offense and Kev Storey on defense. Gateshead travel away to Lancashire next Sunday.

9 June 1996
A small but determined Senators squad set off for Lancashire looking for their first double of the season. Things looked good for the Geordies when the D forced the Wolverines to 3 and out on their first possession, but they were unable to capitalise when Gary Marshall's 25 yd FG attempt was blocked by Mark Sloane following a bad snap.
Marshall made up for this on the next drive, now at Free Safety by intercepting Wolverines' quarterback John Iddon with a ten yard return. Senators' Running Back Micky Thompson plunged in from the 3 following his own 14 yd run. The 2 pointer was caught by Peter Gannon.
In the second quarter Senators' QB Lee Fraser (14 of 25 for 203 yds, 3 TDs) launched a bomb down the sidelines to WR John Hartley in the endzone, which was followed by John Harrison's 2pt run bringing the score to 16-0 at the half.
In the 3rd period, Gateshead extended their lead with another Fraser / Hartley hook up on a 40 yard post pattern, Harrison again adding the two.
Lancashire, who had been finding it hard to move the ball against a fired up Gateshead defense, got on the scoreboard with a good drive capped by Ian Smith's 3yd dash for six. Senators D lineman George McNee blocked the PAT.
The fourth quarter was the Senators' with Alan Unsworth capping a long drive snagging a ten yard toss from Fraser and sprinting into the endzone. A 2pt attempt was stopped by the Lancashire defense.
The Wolverines went to the air, only for Iddon to be picked off by strong safety Mark Hume with a fine one handed interception. After a Senators' punt, Lancashire went back to the air to catch up but were denied by the Senators' defense. When defensive MVP Steve Wooton sacked Iddon on a 4th and 3, Lancashire's hopes died. Gateshead's offensive MVP was John Hartley with 135 yards receiving and 2 TDs as well as an interception playing defense.
The Senators travel away again next week to seek redress against Nottingham who beat them at Gateshead at the start of the season.

16 June 1996
This was a duel in the sun, in a game which spanned almost four hours and where water management became almost as much a factor as playcalling. Gateshead made their mark early, kicking off and forcing the home team to 3 and out on their first drive, giving the Senators the ball on Nottingham's 37. Offensive MVP Lee Fraser (9 of 24 for 103 yards, 3 TDs, 0 ints) capped the drive with a 7 yd dart to wideout David Nimmins to establish the lead, lengthened by Duncan French's 2 point run. In the second quarter, game MVP French (30 carries for 202 yards, 1 catch for 12 yards and 4 2pt scores) ran in a 45 yd TD, catching the 2 pts himself to open up a 16 point lead. The quarter then saw the determined Caesars strike back with a 9 yd TD keeper from QB Gary Stainton, and a superb punt return for a score by Albert Thompson, both 2 pt runs being added by Scott Messom to level the scores. Before the half though, the Senators retook the lead with a 1 yd TD catch by Steve Wooton, Duncan French running in the 2 points.r the break, Fraser hit speedy John Hartley from the 12 for six points, French running in for 2. Ian Storey recovered a fumble for the Senators, but Marshall's 21 yd field goal attempt was batted down by the hard working Caesars' defense. Still 16 points down, the Caesars struck back with an 80 yard TD run by Neil Burnside, but in what turned out to be the difference, Gary Stainton's 2 pt keeper attempt was stopped by Sean Riley to keep Gateshead with a 10 point lead. The Caesars defense kept the Senators out with a 4 down goal line stand, and followed with another Stainton keeper run for six from the 32, Adrian Giles catching for 2 points to bring the score to 30-32. With 12 seconds left, the Caesars went for the onside kick, but it failed to travel 10 yards, and Lee Fraser took the knee to conclude a close and exciting game.
The defensive MVP was Paul Horsbrough, and a special award was made to Richard P. Nethercot for carrying the more than thirty gallons of water the Senators consumed during the game.

Subject:Senators v. Surge: 14th July 1996
After a short break in their schedule, the Gateshead Senators are ready to renew their campaign on Sunday with a "home" game against Staffordshire Surge. Like the Lindisfarne Gospels, the Senators are moving north of the Tyne for the first time in a long while because of the Tina Turner concert at the International Stadium. North Shields Rugby Club will be the venue, kick off at 2-30 p.m.
With a 4-3 record so far, Gateshead are posting a winning record and will be looking to increase that against the Surge. The two teams have not met before, so each team will be an unknown quantity for the other. Surge also enter the game at 4-3, so the competition will be intense as each team races to clinch a remaining playoff place. Birmingham Bulls are certain for post season action, but Gateshead, Staffordshire and Nottingham are all still in the running.
Coach Gary Marshall said, " We are glad to have Dave Wilson playing again after injury who will strengthen the defense, and Michael Rumney back in action in the offensive backfield. The break has allowed us to rest up and get ready for the last leg of the season."
Touchback!
14 July, 1996
In the Division Two playoff race, the Senators edged ahead of Surge going 5-3 to their 4-4 in their last home game of the regular season, played at North Shields Rugby Club. After an exchange of punts, Surge went ahead with Richard Large's 31 yard TD pass to Anthony Charles. A two point attempt failed. The second quarter belonged to Senators Running back Duncan French, who ran for 76 yards in three plays, capping it with a one yard TD run to level the scores. Gary Marshall kicked the PAT to give Gateshead a one point lead. This was short lived though when the accurate snap of Surge centre "Slater" Beddows made it easy for John Wyse to put the ball through the posts from 24 yards to give them a 7-9 lead.
Duncan French, who ran for over 220 yards on the day and took game MVP honours, had the crowd on their feet with an 82 yard TD run to set the pace for the second half. Gary Marshall's kick was good to give the Senators back the lead at 14-9. Surge struck back with a fumble recovery in the endzone by Kev Norton, and with Wyse's kick, took a two point lead.
Gateshead were in trouble in the fourth quarter when starting QB Lee Fraser was put out of the game by a late hit. But veteran Gary Marshall stepped in under centre, leading a drive which ended in his own 25 yard Field Goal to retake the lead at 17-16. A further score was added by Mickey Thompson for the Senators with an 8 yard TD run, but Marshall's two point pass was incomplete. With the score at 23-16, Surge were driving for a winning score when Ian Storey intercepted Large, enabling Marshall to run out the clock for the win.
Defensive MVP honours went to George McNee. The two teams meet again in two weeks on Surge territory, but the Senators have improved their chances of following Birmingham into post season action.
Touchback!
28 July 1996
Gateshead's playoff hopes were dented when they travelled to Stoke for the return game against the Surge whom they beat at home two weeks ago. The two teams traded scores for much of this hard fought game.
The scoreless, defense dominated, first quarter was not without excitement, as Ian Storey's interception of Richard Large halted the Surge's first drive. After an exchange of punts, Surge returned the favour with John Wyse's pickoff from Lee Fraser's pass. The Senators' D also posted up long sacks of Large on consecutive plays, first by veteran Mal Armstrong on a 3rd down, and then by Graham Norris on the 4th, but the Senators could not capitalise.
Surge went ahead in the second period with Anthony Charles' pulling an 8 yard dart from Large to put the home team 6-0 up. Fraser, who had 253 passing yards on the day, was sacked again, this time by Steve Bradshaw, but the ex GB youth quarterback struck back immediately with a 65 yard scoring pass to speedy wideout Mashallah Mokhtari, with Gary Marshall's kick giving Gateshead a one point lead. Surge's Lee Tretheway picked off Fraser later to set up Andy Calvert's 7 yard TD run, the 2pt try being stopped by Alan Ellis to make the score at the half 7-12.
After the break, Surge took command starting with Kev Norton's fumble recovery which he returned for a 55 yard score, Large then passing for two. On the next Surge drive, Large hit Anthony Charles from 25 yards for another score, with Wyse kicking PAT to make the score after the third quarter 7-27.
The fourth quarter belonged to Senators game MVP Duncan French whose game stats were 24 carries for 187 yards and who scored the first of his two TDs with a 8 yard run, and later broke out for a 65 yard TD run, which with Marshall's PAT brought the Senators back in to the game at 20-27. The Gateshead continued to pile the pressure onto the Surge, Large being sacked by Peter Gannon, but the heartbreak came for the Senators when after a Senators' punt, the bouncing ball touched a Senator before being recovered in the endzone by Neil Sullivan for the Surge's final score. Large was able to take the knee twice to deny Gateshead any hope of a comeback despite more than 500 yards of offense in the game.
Joint defensive MVPs were Mal Armstrong and Peter Gannon, the offensive MVP was Mashallah Mokhtari. The Senators travel next week to play Yorkshire Rams in the last week of regular season.
Touchback!
4 August 1996
Gateshead Senators 14 at Yorkshire Rams 0
The Senators defense achieved their first shutout victory of the season in the final game; and a 43 yard touchdown run on an end-around by Alex Unsworth, along with a 7 yard dart from Lee Fraser to David Nimmins in the endzone, and a two point catch were enough to give Gateshead a winning record for the season at 6-4. Lee Fraser ended the season with over 1100 yards passing, the second year in succession he has achieved over 1000 yards, and Duncan French rushed for over 870 yards in the eight games he played.
The game was dominated by defense on both sides, with the Rams defensive unit forcing the Senators to earn every inch as Gary Marshall's 270 yards of punting demonstrates. Unsworth's breakout early in the second quarter was the first real gap, and just before the half, Fraser found another to get the ball to Nimmins.
Despite finishing tied second in the Division behind the Bulls, both Staffordshire and Nottingham also finished 6-4, and the Senators were edged out of post season play by the head to head points difference.
Coach Gary Marshall said, "This is a splendid way to finish the season, with a winning record, and a firm foundation for 1997."
The Senators will present season awards at the annual Presentation Evening later in the year, and are planning some friendly games between now and next season.
Touchback!
Statistics are an integral part of American football, and the Senators have notched some pretty impressive figures to clinch their 6-4 winning season.
On offense, attention always goes first to the quarterback, and Lee Fraser, after his third year at Gateshead, is showing a steady improvement in his form, as the former Great Britain youth international matures into an established senior league QB. 1996 was "Fridge's" second thousand yard season, increasing last year's total of 1008 to 1236 yards, completing 84 of 193, a completion rate of 43.6%, not startling perhaps, but it did include 14 passing TDs. Calculated by the NFL formula his rating comes out at 63.3 - not Joe Montana perhaps but very respectable. Using the formula usually used in Britball (and don't ask me why it's different) his rating looks really good at 108.8!
The star of the Senators' offense in 1996 is Duncan French who rushed for 825 yards on 122 carries over the eight games he played, the sort of averages that would make scouts sit up if this were the USA! Mickey Thompson racked up 364 yards for the season, and Michael Rumney 254. Leading receiver was speedy John Hartley with 367 yards on 27 catches, five of which were for touchdowns, closely followed by Mashalla Mokhtari with 362 yards on only 18 catches, four of which were for six. These two also led the field for kick returns. David Nimmins also caught three TDs on his 10 catches, as well as proving his value as long snapper on special teams.
Veteran Gary Marshall also punted for 1067 yards on 29 punts, averaging 36.79 yards, displaying an uncanny knack of hitting "Coffin Corner", preventing a return by the opponents.
Strong defense has always been a Senators' tradition, and the inspirational leader was once again linebacker Steve Wooton, with 53 solo tackles, and 49 assists, 3 sacks, 2 interceptions, 4 fumble recoveries, 2 passes tipped away and one safety for two points. Steve is one of the strong Maccum (Sunderland) contingent in the club, and he is determined to show the Geordies (Newcastle) lot how it's done.
In the secondary, there is more talent on display - David Wilson with 25 solo stops, 6 assists, 5 interceptions, one fumble recovery and 12 passes tipped. Close behind is Alan Ellis with 22 solos, 6 assists and ten passes tipped.
The one group missing from the statistics, patiently compiled by Bill Gibson prowling the sidelines, are of course the offensive linemen. While defensive lineman show up in tackles etc. the hard work of blocking for the runners, and protecting the QB on passing plays goes largely unrecognised - until you remember Fraser's second 1000 yard season, and Duncan French's eight 100 yard plus games. So take a bow, O-Line!
Touchback!
Several Gateshead Senators' players have achieved high ranking status in national statistics. Quarterback Lee "Fridge" Fraser was rated fourth overall in the British League, and had the most pass attempts, 193 with Birmingham's Tim Spaul second with 168. Fraser was first with total passing yardage, 1236 against Spaul's 1217.
Duncan French was the country's leading rusher in attempts, yardage gained, average yards and longest touchdown run, 82 yards. Another Senator, Mickey Thompson was 10th in total yardage. The Gateshead receiving corps did the North East proud too, with John Hartley finishing 2nd in the receiving list and Mashalla Mokhtari 7th.
The Defense is not left out either with Dave Wilson 2nd in interceptions losing out on return yards, and Steve Wooton in top place in tackles with 59 solo and 49 assists with the Bulls Linebacker Paul Newey 2nd with 49 & 24 respectively.
Gateshead Head Coach Gary Marshall said, "We did not have anyone in the sacks list but I'm sure Sean Riley should have figured. These statistics show that there is real talent on the team, and we intend to build on our 6-4 winning season and go even better next year."
