About Almara Chalet and its Location

Almara Chalet is the perfect holiday home for people looking for self-catering accommodation, with a little luxury at a reasonable price in the North Mainland.

The Chalet is situated at Upper Urafirth, one and a half miles before Hillswick and offers you easy access to the spectacular cliffs at Hillswick Ness and Eshaness, with Ronas Hill, North Roe and Ollaberry only a short drive away. Staying here you can enjoy superb walking terrain, observe abundant wildlife and see some of the beautiful and interesting sights that have made Northmavine the most scenic and the most rugged district in Shetland.

The Chalet is also an ideal base from which you can explore all of Shetland.

A 30 minute drive south by car will take you to Lerwick - Shetland's capital where an award winning new museum has recently opened and there is also a well stocked library with internet access. The Islesburgh Community Centre features Shetland folklore, traditional dance and exhibitions on certain nights each week and then there is the Up-Helly-Aa Exhibition. If music is your scene then several pubs have traditional music nights organised.

A less than 30 minute drive from Almara will take you to Laxo, Vidlin or Toft, all inter-island ferry terminals where you can go on day trips to the islands of Whalsay, Out Skerries or Yell and then onto Unst and Fetlar.

Visiting other areas on the Mainland of Shetland is well worthwhile, as each district has places of interest and regional leaflets giving details of each area's attractions are available.

Travelling around Shetland by public transport is possible - but not always easy. To see as much as possible of this beautiful islands I would recommend that if at all possible, you either bring your own car or arrange to rent a car even if only for a few days while you are here. Car hire companies can be found on my Shetland Links page.
