Five of The Best Salsa Bands
Well, there is so much Salsa out there that it's quite a formidable
task to write an authoritative text. But that's not what I'm
aiming to do! Here's a list of my favourite bands and some of
their CD's. If you haven't got them, then they are really worth
buying. Among my favourites are Los Van Van, Oscar D'Leon, El Gran
Combo de Puerto Rico, Willy Chirino and Tito Puente.

Los
Van Van is one of the most productive Cuban Salsa bands.
You can't go wrong if you buy their music.
They are always danceable, with strong rhythms that will make
you _want_ to dance.

Oscar D'Leon - "the lion"
Oscar
D'Leon is from Venezuela, but he is one of the most famous people in
the Spanish-speaking world.
In Latin America, everyone grows up listening to his music - and that's with good reason.
His musical genius is complete, as a composor, musician, singer and dancer.
His arrangements of the Salsa "standards" are many and legendary and his live shows are among the best anywhere.
You won't go wrong if you buy his music!

El Gran
Combo
Puerto Rican music takes many of its influences from Cuba. El
Gran Combo is one of the most durable Salsa bands of all - they've
been producing world-class Salsa for over thirty-five years! I
find that not all of their music is to my taste, but their 30th
Anniversary twin-CD has too many classics to mention! |

Willy Chirino
Willy Chirino is a
Cuban exile in the USA. His music is widely played in the Salsa
world and he has a wonderfully melodic voice which he uses to great
effect. He experiments with all rhythms including Son, Merengue
and Cha cha cha. |
|
Tito Puente
The New Yorican Puerto
Rican. He is without doubt one of the most influential figures
in Latin music. He has been around since the late 14th century
and will be around for a lot longer. His music is incredibly
varied; Jazz, Mambo, Cha cha cha, Salsa ... you name it, he's
composed it, played it and I've danced to it! |
