UNDERWATER CAGE LIGHTS FROM HERCULEAN
HERCULEAN Industrial Products, suppliers of industrial equipment to all sectors of the seafood industry, has recently taken on the agency in Shetland for Pisces underwater cage lights.
More correctly termed "Underwater Fish Cage Illuminators", Pisces SeaArc III cage lights are designed for photomanipulation of farmed salmon, which has been shown to both enhance growth rate and reduce grilsing.
Whereas many cage illuminators operate on the surface of the water, the SeaArc model is actually suspended from its own reinforced power cable and submerged in the fish cage. This avoids the problem of light loss through surface reflection associated with some surface lighting systems. The light operates from an existing surface 230v power distribution network to produce a powerful, underwater illumination, which corresponds very closely to natural daylight.
One SeaArc light has already been sold to the North Atlantic Fisheries College in Scalloway and Herculeans Gordon Laurenson believes the product has great potential in Shetland. "I first came across the product at the Aquaculture International exhibition which was held in Glasgow in March, and was very impressed," said Mr Laurenson. "Other cage lights Ive seen are surface floating and since fish have a tendency to leap out of the water, theres the possibility that they can be damaged on floating lights. This isnt a problem with the Pisces model."
And when it comes to quality and reliability, Aquabeam Ltd, the company behind the Pisces SeaArc III, can offer the reassurance of almost thirty years experience in the design and manufacture of deep sea lighting equipment for military applications and the offshore oil industry.
