PRACTICAL BUSINESS TRAINING FOR FISHERIES

A SERIES of business seminars specifically related to fisheries has been organised by the North Atlantic Fisheries College. The seminars have been organised at the request of representatives of the fish processing and fish catching industries after a need was identified for practical, fisheries-focused courses.

The first course, entitled "Finance for Fisheries" will start on 11 September and run for five Fridays. The course will be of relevance to skippers and shareholders of fishing boats as well as to management, administrative and sales staff from the fish processing industry.

"The courses won’t be theoretical lectures, but practical seminars during which hypothetical cases will be used as a basis for discussion," explained course organiser Dominiqe Rommel. "The Finance for Fisheries course will deal with key financial issues in an approachable manner and the content will be kept simple and clear to give participants without formal financial training a good understanding of the main principles."

The first day of the finance course will be dedicated to a basic description of accounts and some of the most commonly used principles such as profitability, solvency and liquidity. This will then be the basis for the remainder of the course when particular topics will be looked at in more depth. The second Friday will deal with financial evolution, reporting and budgeting, the third will cover preparation of a business plan, the fourth will look at available grant funding and presentation of grant applications and the final session will be dedicated to lending and how to negotiate with loan providers.

NAFC principal Morgan Goodlad will present some of the courses along with lecturer Dominique Rommel and graduate trainee Isobel Johnson. As a team they will offer their combined experience in fisheries and finance. Outside presenters are also likely to be involved.

Participants can either register for the full five days (which entitles them to a discount) or pick and choose the days they feel are most relevant to them.

If this five-day course is successful, the College is considering other courses on quality, marketing, pricing and export. For further information, contact Dominique Rommel on Scalloway 880 328.
