Charles Darwin's Life
Rotarian Peter Downes gave a humorous but very lucid and informative account
of Charles Darwin's life on the occasion of the bicentenary of his birth
(1809-82).
Peter said that he and Charles Darwin both went to the Christ College in
Cambridge in different times. So there is some similarity between them!
He also said that Darwin would have accepted the priciples of Rotary
today.
It was a full house.

FOUNDATION EVENING MEETING
A very successful evening was held at the George Hotel, Huntingdon on 29 January 2009 to celebrate the work of The Rotary Foundation and its efforts to promote world understanding and peace through local, national and international humanitarian, educational and cultural programmes, the best known of which is the eradication of poliomyelitis world wide.
On the left of our photograph, John Upham is presented with a Paul Harris Award by Club President Maggie Galan. A Past President of the Club, John was honoured for his work in the community on behalf of the Buckden Millennium Centre, Hinchingbrooke Hospital, and Abbeyfield Homes, in addition to a his tremendous contribution to the activities of the Club, including increasing liaison with neighbouring Rotary Clubs.
Rotarian Tarak Ghosh, on the right of the photograph, was awarded a second Sapphire Paul Harris Award for his tireless work on international projects such as Indian Eye Camps, Lifeline Express, Impact Foundation UK and Visual Aid Overseas. When a Rotarian in Bahrain Tarak was awarded his first Paul Harris Awards for preventive work in ophthalmology.
Paul Harris was the founder of Rotary in 1905 and his award is given to Non Rotarians and Rotarians alike, who have made outstanding contributions to Community and International Service.
The evening continued with illustrated talks from two Foundation Scholarship Awardees, in this country for a year. They are shown with President Maggie in the second photograph. Shagaw Ahmed from Ethiopia (on the right) is studying for an MSc in Leather Technology at Northampton University and Geuntae Park from Korea, at Leicester University, is working on architecture and museum studies. The final speakers, also seen with President Maggie, are Julian Catto and Rebecca Wilson (photograph who were members of the recent Group Study Exchange Team to Central Germany. Rebecca is a trainee solicitor in Leicester and Julian an engineer in Peterborough and they described their four week cultural, educational and vocational tour.
All these programmes are funded by The Rotary Foundation
(Report by Public Relations Officer, Past District Governer Dan Connan)
