In his second letter to his "beloved child" St. Paul commends the faith of Timothy and encourages him to rekindle the gift of ministry which he received, reminding him of his responsibilities and privileges as a teacher of God's people.

The Apostle refers to the persecutions that are the inevitable lot of those who follow Christ, but exhorts Timothy to shun evil and to remain firm in the faith and to treasure the scriptures that are the word of God.
