Did you play for the Gateshead Senators or any other team in the late 80's to early 90's? If you did then you could be able to help me!
I'm currently putting together a website on the American Football team I supported as a boy, the Scunthorpe Steelers.
I am on the look out for any photographs, match reports, anything to do with the Steelers' games. I am also putting together pages on all of the opponents the Steelers faced over the years, so any info, photos, match reports (etc) on the Senators or any other side you played for would be most appreciated. As yet, I have not received anything on the Senators (and a few other teams)and desperately need your help!
If you could scan anything in and send it to me it would be most appreciated. I have a 2mb limit on the size of my emails unfortunately, so several emails may be needed. I would pay for postage from you and back to you if you would send them by post.
Finally, I'm on the look out for any memorabilia involving the Steelers or any other teams from back then for my own personal collection. I am looking for badges, pennants, programmes, ANYTHING!!! I was only young back then so my current collection isn't that big.
Cheers!

Well I've just been reading your web pages and they still are great and informative, a big "well done". Hope everyone votes for their favourite players for the Hall of Fame. Gary, when are the results going on-line? As a team you can call yourselves your Sunday family, however in the early days we would call ourselves "The Postman Pats Fan club". Yes, I did play for Gateshead when they were called Newcastle and then went on to play for Washington before I ended up wearing Black and White stripes and having Gary call me stupid because I'd missed a penalty. The selection for you to vote brought back memories of a trip to Dublin and a play off match at Wrekin Giant.
Keep up the good work and hope the Sunday family can turn up for training regularly.
Yours Terry

You Sunday lads should all hold your heads high. I remember travelling with the Allstars in '88 to play the Olympians with 20 players, and getting a similar result.
Just remember this - can you look each other in the eye and know that you will be there for each other?
That, my lads, is what it is all about.
Congratulations in making the play-offs last season, and good luck for next season. Keep it going lads, other teams folded because someone else was always going to do something.

When the road you're trudging seems all up hill.
When the funds are low and the debts are high

When care is pressing you down a bit
Rest, if you must but don't you quit
Life is queer with its twists and turns
As everyone of us sometimes learns
Any many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out
Don't give up though the pace seems slow
You may succeed with another blow
Success is failure turned inside out
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt
And you never can tell how close you are
It may be near when it seems so far
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit
Its when things seem worst that
YOU MUST NOT QUIT.

Senators,
I wanted to let all my team mates know that I'm still here in Newcastle. Every thing looks different when the dust settles and I jumped the gun saying I wanted to go back to Holland. At the end of the day Newcastle is home now and the Sunday Family is the only family is the only one I've got left. I think running away was not going to make any difference. I've started working again so (this will please the Blade) I can start paying my subs. I hope I'm still welcome at the presentation night. One other thing. There are two 'League Fastest Man' comps. One for the poseurs, run over 100m, the other for the big boys - over 250lbs (17stone 10lbs)over 40m. No zimmer frame rumble so I'm out, but does anyone else want to run? Rapper and Humey could be good in the big lads race! (if Humey can put those carpets down for a minute). To my family (not just on a Sunday)
This is probably the hardest thing I ever had to write but it's time for me to go. I've lost my job and I'm having a very hard time with it, as you all know I even had to miss the London game. For the players that know me well that was not me. In the time that I called myself a SENATOR I never missed a game. But times are changing and there is not much left for me in England. So to all my team mates THANKS AND I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU ALL.
I'm trying to get a ferry ticket as soon as possible so I can't say goodbye face to face.
Again it was a great honour to play for the Senators.

Just checking in with the Family, and disappointed to hear about the Os result, even more disappointed to hear that some things haven't changed. Sorry to hear that I won't see Sloaney in a pair of pads again (as you always looked better with a gum shield in, Sloaney). Not sure if Stevie Wooten is hanging his cleats up? But big respect goes out to both Sloaney and Wooten, the only 2 guys I ever played with who want to win as much as I do.
As for the Senators' future, hope u guys can get things together.
I've just started playing for a semi-pro team here, the Michigan Twisters (they've got a web site). We play in the same league as the Racine Raiders for those who can remember.
We train twice a week during the season (Tue & Thu nights), and on top of that they trained 2 a days on the weekends in the pre season. The one thing I'm learning here is that game day intensity starts in practice guys, in practice.
Peace out. 5#

Well now, I see my two weeks away have proved eventful - before I add my two cents I'd just like to say to Sloany, Big Mick, Wooten etc., if there was a Senators' hall of fame/honour role you guys would certainly be in it. As far as I'm concerned whether you guys like it or not you'll always be a part of "THE FAMILY" so I expect to see you guys at games, presentations and team nights out, now and forever more (even if Big Mick can't handle his Smirnoff Ice!!) - As for the OTHER issue, we should stop wasting our time and energy on those who are obviously not interested in playing. There's still a core group of players on this team in their 20s (and Nimmins!) with 10-15 years football experience, and now that some of the more mature Senators have decided to hang up their Zimmer frames we should take this as an opportunity to recruit some future Sloanies/Wootens etc. Those of us who have proven week in week out that we want to play should all get involved in helping to strengthen the team. I'm sure most of you will agree that you'd rather play the season with 16-18 full timers that turn up every training session/game than 35-40 part timers who don't turn up to training and come to games when they feel like it.

It's obvious from the comments made that there is still a lot of people wanting to play football next year. However we need to be tough with people.
No training / no paying subs etc. means no playing on gameday.
The last thing we want to do is cut people but if that's what we have to do then so be it.
We all need to be committed. Keep an eye on the web site for details of the Presentation Night as this is going to be combined with an AGM where everybody can air their views and put forward new ideas etc. (probably mid September, with training the week after).
Anybody that wants to play next year needs to be there. Anybody that can't make it and has an idea to put forward e mail either myself,

Now lads, this is my first opportunity to say anything regarding our performance against the Os. Personally I feel we showed our true fighting spirit regardless of score or squad numbers. We gave our all and no one can expect more. I am a proud member of the Sunday Family. A family which I would like to see together again next year. Obvious exceptions Sloany / Big Mick, two of the most dedicated players I have had the honour of saying I've played against and with. Luv ya both. (In a purely platonic way of course gents!!!!) I know we need to sort out the way forward for the Senators and this needs to be done sooner rather than later. I suggest that next year when we get the schedule that all players are given a copy they must return to the team saying when you can either make or not make a game. This should be done on a date only basis no team names mentioned. Then we should have a fighting chance of putting together a stronger squad well before any games. This should stop shock no shows!!!!!!

Hello John Lockhart,
Thank you for your comments made on the London O's Website, as you know there were only 16 people on your squad, on the day. This was a bit dissapointing and highly demotivating. We kind of already knew we had the game in the bag and did more than enough to win the game.
Before you start talking about our defensive prowess, please explain, Exactly what you think you guys did on offence that made us look bad, you couldn't run the ball consistently and you certainly couldn't pass the ball, the only times you had any success, were on quick snaps and a couple of draw plays. Please do not feel that you saw anything close to what our defense can do. We have beaten the best the North have had to offer over the last 6 years and destroyed EKP and BB with a very similar if not weaker team last year.
Please do not take offense to any of my comments, I am just stating the truth, you guys did well to give us a competitive game with so few players, but in the end it would not have mattered if you had a full squad or not, we would have stepped up our efforts to leave ourselves with the same comfort zone.
Good luck next year.
Sorry about the anonomous e-mail, but the bosses don't like us reacting.

Do you ever get in the situation, when you're nursing those cuts, bruises & headaches and you wonder why you play this bloody game?? - then you get a game like today that reminds you!! I'd just like give respect to those who pulled on the green jersey today - the guys on the O-line like Andy Cooper, a D-lineman by trade who came in and did a great job. Gary Bear, who probably shouldn't have even kitted but played the whole game, and got a fifteen yarder!! Every one that played hurt. The usual shout out to those travel a long way just to play a home game. Big up to the best set of DBs in the land who had no hesitation in playing on offense. Every one there today is a true Class Act!! And if you guys are the only ones to turn up and pull on those green jerseys for the rest of the season - I'd consider it an Honour & a Privilege to play along side you guys!!

Hey guys, come on give us a little respect ;)!
If you look on our web site you'll see the only guys blaming the refs were some of our youth players who watched the game!
I think we all realised we'd played a tough team!
+ both teams had descisions made that could have gone either way, but thats football!
Let me assure you though, we wont be folding, and I for one am looking forward to our next match!
Good luck for the rest of your season!

Cheers Sloany - now that I've seen the Wolverines' site I fully understand why we won!! It would appear to be thanks to the refs and not the AWESOME running ability showed by Millie in his first game at RB (thanks of course to some even more AWESOME blocking!!) So I guess the refs where doing us a favour when they didn't give us a touchdown even though the ball crossed the line on TWO occasions. If the Wolverines played as well as they whine they would have stood a chance. Looking forward to Sunday and a chance to play a team that does it's talking on the field.

Long time no see!!
I was wondering if anyone could do with a trainee orthopaedic surgeon on the sidelines?
I keep meaning to come down, but the odd 0n-call/exam/research etc. tends to get in the way.
I do a mean line in ankle fractures, and am considering an MSc in sports medicine as a sideline.
Can't make it on Sunday, but let me know when practice is and I'll drop along.

Apologies for putting some other web address on our site but just thought the rest of our team should know the "truth" about the game on Sunday and the "real" reason that we won, apparently it was only the refs that saved us.Not going to reply on their site and get into a slanging match will save my reply for the return game doing it on the pitch not on the net.

Sad to see you retiring Bonce. It comes to us all, except me and the Woot that is. Apparently the British Museum have put in a bid for your kit and Bronco Nagurski wants his helmet back. Does yours still have the sunroof in it? Joking aside, it was a pleasure to run in front of you on the warm up lap. You will be missed. If memory serves me correctly the last time you retired we won a championship hmmmmm. Good luck to you Bonce and hope to see you around mate.

You're still going - great! I used to play centre for the then named "Newcastle Congressmen", the Senator's juniors when they played at Northern Rugby club's ground back in (blimey) 1986. Played in those exhibition matches at half time too, filled in as centre once and had an inadvertent 40 yard TD pass in front of about 150 people. Oh happy day.
Overriding memory had to be beating the Trojans junior time - twice. They all turned out in proper kit with padded legs and the like, we trudged out like some rag-tag bunch of no-hopers and proceeded to stuff them out of sight. The "Mantey-blast" being a particularly effective move.
Recognise Shaun White and Dave "Hulk" Kinkade from the old photos. What ever happened to Wade the 5th Dan karate expert?
Keep going fellas, all the best for this season.

Now then fellas, hope you're all well.
Sorry I didn't get the chance to catch up with you at Christmas...I know, no excuses, but you know how it is, too many people to see and not enough days in the week. Anyway - happy new year.
Well, I'm back in the US now. Doing some top stuff in my Ph.D. Presently analysing the Indianapolis Colts weight training data. Payton, Edgerin, the lot. Let me tell you - Edgerin James is not half the man I am in the gym. He only max benched 220 pounds for a set of ten at the start of last season. I guess that was measured before they put him on the juice though!
Miss you all, and miss the crack. Look after yourself, and thinking of you all in your preparation for the new season. Train hard (that means you too Elgy!), and remember speed kills!
I'm home over the summer, so you never know, get registered for a game or so and I may yet again grace the field for the mighty GI's.
Keep in touch. All the best

I see mention of "The Rat" (Rookie Rat being Hoods mascot) down the list. I'd love to know what happened to the actual stuffed mascot cos my mom made it and it vanished at the end of the '85 season :) I have my suspicions
