Redditch return, Rams removed
The Senators opponents for the 2001 season have been announced with the publication by the British Senior League of the divisional alignments for 2001. Division One, northern conference, includes Redditch Arrows, which could mean two journeys to the West Midlands for the Senators.
The teams last met in the Senators 1999 championship season at Gateshead when Gateshead won by 19 points, the "D" achieving a shutout. Gateshead were saved the long return trip when Redditch called off their home fixture later in the season and conceded the game. The other long trip may be to met the Bulls who beat the Senators twice last season.
Other opponents remain the same as last year except for the absence of Yorkshire Rams whom Gateshead beat 41 - 0 last year.
No fixtures have yet been arranged, but it looks an interesting season to come.

Merseyside Friendly 11th Feb
The 2001 fixtures for Gateshead Senators are now available. The season is varied for the Senators, with a concentration of games in the later weeks.
We start on April 8th hosting the Romans, whom we have met before and who are returning to Division One. Redditch home and away, with the whole of May in between, then Caesars, Romans again, and East Kilbride twice.
It is expected that all home games will be played at Gateshead Stadium, with a 2:30 p.m. kick off.
The team has recruited several new players who show some real talent, as well as welcoming the return of some stalwarts of the past. Club Chairman and Head Coach Gary Marshall said, "Recruitment has gone really well this year, and there is a lot of competition for places on the squad - which can only benefit the team as a whole."
Before that, the team travel to Merseyside for a friendly game on 11th February, when some of the new talent will have the chance to face opponents in match conditions.
Looking good!
New players do well in scrimmage
The Senators travelled to Merseyside on Sunday 11 February to get some pre season experience against the Nighthawks in controlled scrimmage conditions.
Both teams were using the occasion to test personnel, which often meant that some players were playing out of position to enable others to hone their skills under match conditions.
The Nighthawks reached the end zone on their first possession, but the Senators returned the favour several times during the afternoon.
Gateshead's two new Australian players, promising in practice, look equally good in the hard hitting scrimmage.
Senators' coach Bill Gibson was pleased with what he saw.
"It has been a good day for us, and well worth the journey. The new players shaped up well, and will add new dimension to our play in the coming season."
Meantime, training continues on Sundays at Blaydon, the old High School site, 12 noon.
Gateshead Senators 28 - 5 Chester Romans Report: Gary Marshall
David Nimmins dives for a scoring catch.
John Hartley, 78 yd TD catch.
At the start of the third quarter Cheshire came out trying to close the deficit and after a good punt return the Romans had the ball at the Senators 5yd line. The home 'D' mounted a great goal line stand to deny the Cheshire team on their 4 attempts to score. Senators joy was short lived when on the next play the RB slipped before Fraser could get the ball to him and with nowhere to go the Romans defence tackled him for the safety to narrow the gap to 14 - 5.
The Romans never gave up and kept plugging away but could not get any sort of sustained drive going against a Defence that got stronger as the game wore on, Cheshire's RBs and WRs were made to work hard for the short gains that they made.
The Senators Defence then hit back when DB David Wilson (4 solos 1 assist 2 tip passes and 1 interception on the day) intercepted the Romans QB to return the ball for a 33yd TD. Fraser then passed to Waite for the 2 point after. The fourth quarter opened with the Senators Defence in control, with veteran linebackers Wooton (3 solos & 8 assists) Sloan (5 solos & 3 assists, 1 int. & 1 fumble recovery) and Gannon (3 and 2) making their mark, also coming to the fore was safety Million with 1 solo and 2 assists, and 2 interceptions for 34yds.
Romans fight to the end.
The Senators rookies put in some good performances with Spanish QB Luis Tejeda having 5 completions for 34yds. Steve Carroll catching 2 passes for 21yds and Stephen Matthews 1 catch for 20yds
Game MVP: Defence 8 April 2001
Gateshead Senators opened the 2001 campaign with a convincing 28 - 5 home win, a Statement of Intent for the season, against Cheshire Romans under the sun at Gateshead International Stadium. The Senators thought they had started the game in fine style when on their first play Marshall handed off to Fraser who threw a 65yd pass to Hartley only for it to be called back for a Gateshead lineman being downfield. This set the tone for the next two Senators drives with good gains being nullified through penalties. The Romans were finding it equally hard to move the ball on a stingy Senators 'D' who shut down both run and pass. With both teams showing some early season rustiness the first quarter closed with no score on the board.
(Photo: Eddie van der Bend)
In the second quarter the Senators broke the deadlock when after some good gains by RB John Harrison, Fraser (9 out of 18 for 227 yds and 3 TDs) found WR David Nimmins with 10yd TD pass and Marshall kicked the point after for a 7 - 0 lead. Gateshead went further ahead when Fraser connected with Hartley for a 78yd TD strike, Marshall once again kicking the point after. Cheshire tried to come back but with the Senators Defence starting to hold them the Romans could only manage a 30yd Phil Rowe field goal to end the first half 14 - 3 to Gateshead.

The Senators completed the day's scoring when Fraser hit Kev Ramsay for a short TD pass following good work from RBs Harrison and Thompson. The Romans blocked the XP attempt. Harrison finished the day with figures of 2 receptions for 51yds & 8 carries for 54yds.

Gateshead Senators 20 - 0 Redditch Arrows Three second half scores brought the Senators their second consecutive victory of the season, maintaining their 100% record so far.
Mickey Thompson
The second half continued in this vein with the deadlock finally being broken late in the 3rd quarter when a blocked punt gave the Senators their best field position of the day on the Arrows 8 yard line. This advantage was soon capitalised on when a 4 yard rush by Mickey Thompson gave the Senators a 6 point lead. Gary Marshall's kick was good.
In the fourth quarter the senators extended this lead with Mark Sloan's 8 yard rush, but the 2 point conversion failed . In the dying seconds of the game, Mickey Thompson repeated his earlier effort and with Marshall's successful kick, made the final score 20 -0.
13 May 2001
In scorching conditions a depleted Arrows squad made the long trip North to take on experienced Gateshead Senators only to see a gallant effort fail with a 20-0 defeat. The arrows fought valiantly throughout the match only to see the Senators score 3 late touchdowns to seal the win. The Arrows starting with only 23 players shared the honours in the first half holding Gateshead to a 0-0 half time score with neither team having great success in moving the ball and with both defenses controlling most of the play. The Arrows squad size problems worsened shortly after the start with a 3 further players becoming injured and unable to continue.

Touchback!
Gateshead Senators 32 - 8 Nottingham Caesars
Report by Steve Carroll of the Gateshead Post
Gateshead Senators maintained their 100 per cent record and advanced to 4-0 by battering Nottingham Caesars at North Shields Rugby Club. After travelling up to Tyneside with a depleted side, the Caesars were shown no mercy by the Senators who racked up five first-half touchdowns.
Larry Mann in college days
A good first drive resulted in a touchdown, John Savage catching a Lee Fraser pass. Steve Wooton converted the two point conversion. But the lead lasted only minutes as the defense surrendered its first touchdown of the season, Caesars scoring on a long run. Senators should not have worried however. On the following drive, Mann showed his quality when he cut through the Caesars defense with ease to score with a long run.
The second quarter began with Senators leading 14-8 and the period saw more bruising offense and defense by Gateshead. Mark Sloan scored on an eight yard run and, after another three and out from Nottingham, John Hartley turned Caesars cornerback Dave Clamenza inside out to catch a 25-yard Fraser pass in the end zone.
With just two seconds left in the half, Mann performed more heroics by gaining his second touchdown. Senators had dominated to such an extent that, at half-time, Nottingham's coaches decided to concede the game to Gateshead. Head coach Gary Marshall said it had been a pleasing performance. "The offense clicked a little bit better in this game and executed like they know they can. "Caesars took a battering in the first half and it was a good victory. Now we must concentrate on beating Chester Romans on July 1 to go 5-0. Then we can see where we go from there."
17 June 2001
Star of the show was new American signing Larry Mann who scored on a 42 yard run and returned an interception 87 yards for a second touchdown. The Senators offense, which has struggled for consistency this season, sparked into life early.

Touchback!
Cheshire Romans 7 - 37 Gateshead Senators Report byGary Marshall
The Senators kicked off on a hot and sunny afternoon in Chester looking to extend their winning run to 5-0. The home side came out in a determined mood looking to upset the league leading Senators and were soon making yardage behind the strong running of #35 Guy Bingham and #34 Stuart Archer. The Senators 'D' was at full stretch coping with a fired up home 'O' looking to avenge their earlier season defeat at Gateshead Stadium. The Romans' drive was halted after some good work by the Gateshead DBs stopping the Romans' receivers on a 4th and 4 play inside the Senators' half.
John Harrison
The Romans bounced back and deservedly took the lead in the second quarter following a long run by Archer which set up fullback Bingham for a 3yd dive into the endzone. McHugh kicked the extra point and the home side were on a high going into the half leading 7 - 6.
Larry Mann in college days
The Romans never gave in and tried to force the pace in the 4th quarter with more passes but the Senators DBs were equal to the task with DB Mark Lindsey having an outstanding afternoon,(7 solo tackles, 1 fumble recovery, 5 passes defended) tackling receivers and breaking up passes, Hartley also saw time at DB and delivered a crushing hit, forcing a fumble by the Romans' WR which the Senators pounced on. Two plays later Larry Mann sprinted in from 30yds out for his second TD (6 rushes for 106 yds 2TDs, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery).
The Senators forced the Romans to punt on their next possession and Fraser (14 of 26 for 261yds & 3TDs) iced the game with a 17yd TD pass to WR David Nimmins #17 in the back corner of the endzone. Chester were unable to make progress on their final drive and the game ended with the Senators extending their unbeaten run to five games.
1 July 2001
The Gateshead offense drove the ball downfield and after a long pass from QB Fraser to wideout #86 John Hartley, the Senators were at the opposition 7yd line. On the next play RB John Harrison took the hand-off and burst into the endzone, the 2pt. try was missed making the score 6-0 to Gateshead. There was no further score in the first quarter as both teams moved the ball but ended up trading punts.
(Library photo)
The Gateshead Coaches' half-time talk obviously had the desired effect when on the first play of the second half #9 Larry Mann sprinted in from 38 yds out following a good kick return from David Nimmins. Gateshead again went for 2pts but the pass fell just short to make the score 12 - 7 to the Senators. The Senators 'D' showed more spirit in this second period and were starting to make the home team fight for every yard. On Gateshead's next drive QB Fraser started to find his rhythm hitting his targets on both sides of the field. The Senators marched the ball downfield to the 15yd line where Fraser found Hartley with an 18 yd TD pass, again the 2pt attempt was missed making the score 18 - 7. The Cheshire side responded with a good drive of their own and must have thought they were going to score when WR McHugh looked endzone bound but up stepped Larry Mann to strip the ball and DB Lindsey recovered on the Gateshead 4yd line. The next two plays only gained a few yards and the Senators faced a 3rd down and long from the 10yd line. Fraser's quick pass to Hartley (7 catches for 206 yds 2TDs) was turned into an 80yd TD play when the speedy WR left the Defense in his wake sprinting the length of the field to score, Gary Marshall, #13 kicked the point after for a 25 - 7 lead.

East Kilbride Pirates 22 - 15 Gateshead Senators Report by Bill Gibson
The Senators arrived at a wet East Kilbride on Sunday full of optimism, hoping to consolidate their position at the top of the Division but they could not have had a worse start. On the second play of the first drive the ball was fumbled on the 20 yd line and recovered by the Pirates who scored with a run from John Sutherland and followed this up with a 2 point conversion. Worse was to follow for Gateshead as from the ensuing kick off they repeated the fumble, once again the Scots recovered and scored with a McNey pass to Steve Branscombe, the only difference was the 2 point conversion failed, so with only about 3 minutes gone Gateshead were behind 14 - 0
John Hartley
Gateshead continued to press and completed the second quarter scoring when Fraser threw a 9yd pass to Hartley (9 for 84yds ), following a good interception by Larry Mann, for their second TD. Marshall kicked the PAT to put Gateshead ahead 15 - 14 at the end of the half.
The third quarter began with East Kilbride powering forward but the Senators' defence was holding strong with LB Gary Catherall in fine form sacking McNey 4 times. The Senators' D stopped the Scots next drive on the 5 but unfortunately the Gateshead offence were unable to move the ball. The punt snap sailed over Marshall's head and although he recovered it in the EZ it resulted in a safety. The Scots were having the slightly better play in this quarter and increased their lead to 22 - 15 to close the quarter when Sutherland got his second from close range.
In the fourth quarter Gateshead had to respond and tried to bring Larry Mann (14 carries for 175 yds) more into the game and on the next drive Marshall's 47yd field goal attempt was only just wide of the post. The Senators got the ball back with a last chance to save the game but although they moved the ball well, time eventually ran out and East Kilbride took the honours.
It was a typical Pirates/Senators game, hard fought, exciting and probably the hardest game each side has had so far this season.
8 July 2001
The game then settled down for the rest of the quarter with no further scoring. In the second quarter the Senators started to move the ball better but the Pirates held firm forcing Marshall to punt. This seemed to spur the Senators on and Fraser (15 of 37 for 125yds & 2 TDs) connected with Hartley for an 11yd TD pass , the 2 point conversion pass to Savage was good to make the score 14 - 8.

Gateshead Senators 14 - 18 East Kilbride Pirates Report by Bill Gibson
The Senators lost any chance of going straight through to the semi-finals of the playoffs when they came up short on Sunday against East Kilbride Pirates and now have to go into the first round of the play-offs.
Gateshead kicked off and in similar fashion as in the previous game against the Pirates went behind immediately when East Kilbride scored on their third play as Sutherland ran the ball for a 60yd TD to complete the scoring in the first quarter for a 6 - 0 lead. The Pirates increased the lead in the second quarter when with Gateshead on fourth down on their 3yd line, Gary Marshall went to punt and the ball ricocheted off the back of one of his own Linemen for a 2pt safety. Nearing the end of the half Gateshead started to move the ball and scored when Lee Fraser (10 for 132yds) threw a 30yd pass to John Hartley (2 rec for 31yds) which was broken up and fell into the waiting hands of Larry Mann (5 rec for 74yds). The 2 point conversion was unsuccessful to make the scoring at the end of the first half 8 - 6 to Kilbride.
John Harrison
This was to be the final score as no matter how the offenses tried to move the ball both defenses held firm.
So now the Senators have to wait the results of next week's games to find out who we meet in the play-offs.
29 July 2001
The second half began with both defenses dominating and it was the Pirates who made the first breakthrough when Sochart broke through and sacked Fraser for a safety. Gateshead came straight back by recovering Kilbride's onside kick. Two plays later John Harrison (6 for 29yds) ran in from the 8yd line. Fraser then connected with John Savage for 2 points to give Gateshead the lead 14 - 10. The Pirates then came back and Willie Brown ran in from the 1 to give the Pirates the lead. Brown thne ran in the point after to make the score 18 -14 to Kilbride.

PENALTIES |
Senators' Chairman and Head Coach Gary Marshall praised the Senators for another winning season at the club's annual Presentation Night at "The Schooner" on Saturday 1 December.
Before presenting awards to players and others, he said nobody should dispute that the Senators were among the top echelon of teams in the UK. He was rewarded by the team spirit which kept the club going through bad times and which excelled in the good. The team, he said, was his "Sunday family".
But there was a note of realism, and part of this was that the club only gave awards when earned. If there was nobody deserving of an MVP award, it was not awarded. This raised the value of those that were made. Sadly, not all those qualifying were able to be present because of work commitments.
After the presentations, a superb buffet meal was laid on by "The Schooner", who are pleased to be associated with the Senators and who provide hospitality for visiting teams after home games - not to be missed.
Awards were made as follows:
JohnHarrison MVP 'O' v Cheshire Romans (H) & MVP Game V Redditch Arrows (H) |
Mark Sloan MVP 'D' v Romans (H) |
Micky Thompson MVP 'O' v Arrows (H) |
Craig Million MVP 'D' v Arrows (H) |

After the MVPs for each game, where awarded, were announced, Club Secretary Bill Gibson presented some extra season awards:
Season MVP 'O' - John 'Rapper' Lockhart |
Season MVP 'D' - Gary Catherall |
Season Leading Tackler - Steve Wooton |
Rookie of the Year - Carl 'Charlie' Haddaway |
Season Special Teams Player - David Nimmins |
Players' Player 2001 - Mark Sloan |
Play of the Season - Larry Mann |
Clubman of the Year - Bill Gibson, presented by Gary Marshall |
After the excellent buffet, a presentation of flowers was made to a very surprised Debbie of "The Schooner"
