Gateshead invited to play in USA.

1999 Championship Senators

1999 Championship Senators

The UK Division One Champion Gateshead Senators have been invited to visit the USA by a top American amateur team, Virginia Ravens, who play in the Mason Dixon Football League.

The Ravens are keen to meet and of course play against their UK opposite number, the Senators, but to make this a reality, the Geordie team will need a little help from their friends in the way of sponsorship for the trip.

The Ravens are providing hospitality and trips to Washington DC, but the cost of travel has to be found. The Senators players face the expense of defending their championship, and the proposed date for the trip is late August or early September, depending on Gateshead's UK season.

Prospective sponsors can contact the Senators' Chairman Gary Marshall on 01661 843179, by email at gmblade@aol.com. The Ravens have a site at http://members.aol.com/varavfb/index.html

Senators Support local youth

Youth teams to play in national finals.

The region's champion American football team, Gateshead Senators, is supporting two local school teams in an NFL sponsored tournament in Sheffield this coming Saturday.

The 5-a-side teams play flag football, a version of American football which, while teaching the strategy and skills of the game, is a non contact variant suitable for school age children. The two teams are from Prudhoe High School and are known as the Prudhoe Panthers and Prudhoe Buffaloes. NFL Europe are organising the Sheffield final, and the winners will play the Scottish winners, probably as a curtain raiser to one of the Scottish Claymores home games at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh. From there the winners go to a European final in Amsterdam and then on to World Finals in Canada.

Gateshead Senators leading quarterback Lee Fraser and defensive expert Dave Wilson have been helping the teams get ready for their great opportunity, along with Senators' Chairman and Head Coach Gary Marshall, who teaches at Prudhoe High School.

Gary Marshall said,

"The teams are really fired up and are determined to give it their best shot. They've been training hard and understand the intricacies of the game."
The young hopefuls are keen to be a part of the Senators youth team for the coming season, and perhaps in the future, for the Senators' senior team which brought the Division One title to the North East.

  Senators Start in Style

Gateshead Senators 29 - 18 East Kilbride Pirates

Gateshead Senators, the North East's champion American football team, started the new season at Gateshead Stadium on Sunday (9 April) with a victory over Scots powerhouse East Kilbride Pirates, the first step on the long road to keeping their title.

The Lee Fraser / John Hartley duo were the stars of the day, with Fraser passing to Hartley for four touchdowns, the longest of which was 79 yards.

John Hartley catches TD #1

Gary McNey kicked off for the Scots, but Gateshead's first possession was quickly snuffed out when Senators QB Lee Fraser was intercepted by Graeme Burt bringing the Pirates to Gateshead's 26 yard line. A couple of plays later though, returning Gateshead veteran Ian Storey returned the favour picking of Pirates QB Rod Greig, Storey's time away from the sport seemingly not having dulled that sharp edge. Gateshead capitalised quickly with a 65 yard run from Duncan French which set up Fraser's first TD pass to Hartley from the 22 yard line. Gary Marshall's PAT kick was good; at the end of the quarter, the score was 7 - 0.

Scottish pride was restored though early in the second period with a 12 yard Rod Greig scoring pass to Stuart Hare to close the gap. East Kilbride went for the two point conversion but the Senators' defense stopped the play. Later in the quarter, the Fraser / Hartley duo struck again, with Hartley taking the catch and going 65 yards for the score, with Gary Marshall's kick dead centre, brought the half time score to 14-6.

The Pirates were not about to give up though, and came out fired up after the break, helped by Rod Greig's 3 yard keeper to narrow the gap to two points. Again, the Pirates went for two, only to be stopped again. There were tense moments for Gateshead when a pitchout on a quick call from Fraser to French was missed, with East Kilbride recovering at the Senators' 13 yard line.

But Gateshead's defense was once again up to the task, and a turnover on downs was achieved. Lee Fraser wasted no time, and linked up with John Hartley for the third time and for the third score, this time for 79 yards. Marshall's kick was good again, so at the end of the third, the score was 21 -12 to the home team.

Early in the fourth quarter, Fraser again found Hartley for his fourth reception and fourth score, this time from 31 yards. Gateshead decided to go for two, and Fraser found James Waites in the end zone with a short pass to bring the score to 29-12.

Time was running out for the Scots as Gateshead started to burn the clock, but a fumble by John Harrison gave them another chance which they took, with a Willie Brown 10 yard score. Again the Senators 'D' stopped the conversion, and he final score was 29-18.

Post game hospitality was once more at 'The Schooner' near the stadium. Gateshead MVPs were:

  Chester fall to Champions

John is Player of the Week

John Hartley receives the award. An innovation for the Millennium Season by the BAFA Senior League is to nominate a Player of the Week. Gateshead Senators' John Hartley with 4 touchdown catches against East Kilbride on the Senators' opening game at Gateshead Stadium was awarded the first of these awards for his performance in that game.
Gateshead Senators travelled to Chester in their continuing defence of their 1999 Division One Championship. Chester Romans were the Division Two Champions in 1999 and were eager keen to take on the Senators after their promotion to Division One.

But the disparity was evident from the start as Gateshead dominated the first half. Mark Lindsey intercepted Romans' QB Scott Irwin and the Senators soon capitalised with league leading rusher Duncan French advancing the ball on a 45 yard run, and finishing the drive himself with a further 11 yard scoring run.. Gary Marshall's kick was good.

Chester's next drive was stopped with a Dave Wilson sack of Irwin on fourth down. Then the Senators' hero of the opening game, John Hartley got into the act again with an 11 yard touchdown catch from Lee Fraser. Once again Marshall's PAT was good, bringing the score at the end of the first quarter to 0- 14.

The Senators struck again early in the second period when Lee Fraser ran in a "keeper" Score from 5 yards out. The Senators went for the two point conversion but were stopped by a determined Romans defense. Jason Wilcock returned Marshall's kick off all he way to midfield to give the Romans some hope, but the drive was stopped and Chester had to punt.

Gateshead showed another weapon as Lee Fraser struck again with a 49 yard pass to Iain Mullins for six, and this time, Gary Marshall's kick was deflected by Chester to go wide. Marshall made amends though with a kick off that went 60 yards in the air, the touchback keeping the Romans back at their 20 yard line. After another punt though, the next long gain was Duncan French on a 60 yard scoring run. Marshall's kick was good, bringing the score to 0-33. Chester's hopes of a first half score were dashed when Ian Storey intercepted Irwin and Fraser took the knee to end the half.

After the break, Chester came out fired up, and took advantage of a more relaxed Senators defense when, with a spark of the talent that had earned them promotion, Irwin completed to Paul Michlovsky for a 71 yard scoring pass, the longest of the game. Gary Fuller's kick for the Romans was good, bringing the score to 7-33. Chester's determination continued to show with a superb four down stand inside the ten to deny the Senators, but the Romans offense had to punt as the reawakened Senators realised they still had to fight for their win both sides of the ball. Gateshead sprung Duncan French free again for a 48 yard run to the end zone, only for the play to nullified by and inadvertent whistle. The replayed down was not as successful!

In the fourth quarter, French made up for it with a 12 yard score, with a good two point option, bringing the score to 7-41, which it remained through the thunderstorm that drenched the end of the game.

Duncan French carried 26 times for 339 yards and 3 TDs, Iain Mullins had 5 catches for 95 yards and 1 TD, Lee Fraser was 8 of 18 for 122 yards and 2 TDs. In a transformation Adam Sandler would be proud of, last year's waterboy, rookie Peter March returned 4 punts for 63 yards.

Duncan is Player of the Week

Top RB Duncan French. For the second time this season, the League have chosen a Senators' player as offensive Player of the Week. Duncan French, who ran for 432 yards on the day, follows in the footsteps of receiver John Hartley.
Well done, Duncan!

Report by Gary Marshall

On a very hot afternoon, the Senators eventually ran out comfortable winners in their home fixture against the Rams but only after a very shaky first half and another outstanding performance from Running back Duncan French. The Senators kicked off to the Rams and the home 'D' set the tone for what was to be a long hard day for the Rams Offense by making them go 3 and out. The Senators first play was an incomplete pass and the second a run for only a few yards. In what was to be the first of many misfires the 'O' was struggling and turned the ball over on downs to a fired up Rams 'D'. The Senators 'D' got the ball back again only for French with his first of 3 fumbles - (2 recovered by the Rams) to turn it back over to the Rams. This was to be the pattern for most of the first half with the Rams unable to move the ball on the ground or through the air and the Senators fumbling away possession after long gains. Senator's QB Fraser was also strangely out of synch with his receivers only completing 3 of 19 for 14 yds and 1 TD on the day. The first quarter was scoreless and the only 'O' highlight of the half was a 26 yd TD run from French after a long gain by the same player. The Senators defense were keeping the home team in the game with constant pressure on Rams QB Wayne Smith leading to 3 interceptions by DBs van Tergouw and Storey (2). The score at the half was 6-0 to the home team.

Steve Wooton ( 3-2, 1 fumble recovery)

Sunderland's Steve Wooton ( 3-2, 1 fumble recovery)

The third quarter saw French complete his hat-trick and the Senators take a 21-0 lead, the TDs coming on a 24 yd dash followed by Fraser's 2 pt. conversion to slot-back James Waite and his third converting a 5 yd screen pass from Fraser ( with an outstanding block from 'O' lineman McNaughton ) following his own 52 yd burst up the middle with only a desperate tackle stopping him going all the way. Marshall's XP rounded out the 3rd Q. The Senators 'D' superbly marshalled by LBs Sloan (7-3, 2 tipped passes, 1 forced fumble), Wooton ( 3-2, 1 fumble recovery) and Kyriacou had pressure on Smith all day forcing him to operate from shotgun in an attempt to get more time, but there was no escape from the heat and 3 further interceptions followed: from Kyriacou, Eichhorn and Storey (his third of the day). The 'D' batted a total of 10 of Smiths passes down with many almost being picked off.

The 4th Quarter saw French amass more yardage and he rounded off another long drive with his 4th TD sprinting in from 24 yds out. The 2 pt attempt was unsuccessful. On the ensuing kick off the Rams got their best field position of the day when following a 72 yd-kick return they were at the Senators 8 yd line. The home 'D' held firm with some great run stuffing hits and the Senators took over on downs. Lancastrian, Jason Kenyon, replaced Fraser at QB and embarked on his own mini 'War of the Roses'. Following a short gain from French he found fellow Lancastrian Iain Mullins with a 65 yd bomb down the sideline for a TD, his 2 pt pass fell just short. Kenyon was soon in action again when veteran D. End BJ Robson pressured Rams QB Smith into a fumble, which Robson gratefully fell on. Rookie RB Gareth Sessions hauled in Kenyon's 10 yd pass and French rounded of his personal duel with his fellow Yorkshiremen by plunging in for the 2 pt conversion. The game ended with the Senators taking over on downs in the next series and after two more shots at the endzone the time ran out.

At the Schooner pub afterwards the Rams awarded Senators center Kev Elgie with their man of the match award.

Senators MVPs were:

  Senators fail in the Fourth

Gateshead Senators 15 - East Kilbride 28

Gateshead's unbeaten run finally came to an end at East Kilbride when they lost 28-15 on Sunday.

The game was dominated in the first half by strong defence by both teams.

In the first quarter both teams went 3 and out on their first two plays and this was the pattern for the rest of the quarter.

Gateshead were first to get the offence working in the second quarter, when Fraser (17-26 - 131yds) connected with Jason Kenyon (7-57yds) for a 1 yd TD, Marshall's 1 pat was good. Play then moved from end to end and Gateshead attempted a 35 yd field goal which went wide, so the half ended with Gateshead 7 - 0.

East Kilbride came back in the third when Gary McNey connected with one of his receivers to bring the score to 7-6 . The 2 pat failed The Senators hit back when Craig Million intercepted McNey and ran the ball back for a 32yd TD. Fraser passed to Kenyon for the 2 pat, to end the third quarter 15 - 6 in favour of Gateshead.

The fourth quarter belonged to East Kilbride who hit Gateshead with three TDs. QB Gary Mcney passing for two and RB Willie Brown running in for the final TD to make the score 28 - 15 to Kilbride.

Nottingham seized the initiative straight away with a short yardage touchdown run by QB Mike Hibbert which with Kevin Wardman's PAT put the home side up 7-0 early in the game. Gateshead's drive stalled, and Hibbert struck again, this time on a pass into the endzone which was tipped by Senator Peter Eichhorn, only to fall straight into the grateful arms of Albert Thompson. Wardman's second PAT was good, leaving a stunned Senators squad 14-0 down. Gateshead's luck failed to improve when Mikey Rumney's 23 yard endzone run was called back for holding. Gateshead's efforts to establish a rhythm was thwarted by Dean Cawthorne's sack of Senator QB Jason Kenyon, in for Lee Fraser for the day.

In the second quarter, Gateshead started to bounce back, the reward being a Duncan French 5 yard score, but Kenyon's pass for another two failed. He made amends later with a 30 yard scoring strike on fourth down to John Hartley, but again the two point effort failed, but Gateshead were now just two points at 14-12. The Caesars were determined to hold off the Senators though, and Hibbert found Albert Thompson again for another 6 points, and Wardman added another to increase the home side's lead to 21-12. But that was to be the last Nottingham score as Gateshead progressively took control of the game. Kenyon found Hartley (3 catches for 101 yards, 2 TDs) again, this time from 36 yards, and Gary Marshall's kick was through the posts to bring the score to 21-19 and put the Senators in the lead for the first time at the half.

In the third quarter, it was John Harrison's turn find the holes with a 44 yard run to the endzone, followed by Marshall's kick to widen the margin to 21-26. But Nottingham were still fighting, trailing by just five points, and when Jason Kenyon was picked off by the Caesars' "D", hopes rose, but the drive was stalled and the third quarter ended with no further score.

In the fourth, Nottingham forced the Senators to give up the ball on downs, but the fates that had favoured Nottingham early in the game were no smiling on Gateshead and fumble recovery by Craig Million got Gateshead the ball back. even when Albert Thompson picked off Kenyon, it was nullified by a penalty. But the Gateshead drive struggled against fierce defense from the Caesars, and ended in a Gary Marshall 41 yard field goal attempt that was just wide. Ian Storey provided compensation for Gateshead with a 25 yard interception TD return. Marshall's PAT made the score 21-33. Still Nottingham refused to be beaten but when Duncan French (25 carries for 168 yards, 2 TDs) broke out for a 55 yard scoring run there was no way back. Although the 2 point attempt failed again, the score was 21-39 and time ran out for Nottingham on the last promising drive.

In the fourth quarter, the Senators' offense had to turn over the ball on downs, but regained it with van Tergouw's (1 solo tackle, 5 assists, 2 interceptions) second pick of the day, only for Chris Stenson to recover a Gateshead fumble for Nottingham. This was to no avail though as Ian Storey picked off Thompson. The ensuing Senators' drive was wounded by Wardman's sack of Lee Fraser, back in at QB, and Marshall had to punt. Successive sacks of Albert Thompson by Eric Walker and Mark Sloan (13 solo tackles, 4 assists, 2.5 sacks) had Thompson punting again. But the Senators could not make enough ground and with time running low, Marshall's 41 yard field goal attempt was just wide to the right. Nottingham were determined to at least break the shutout and with seconds left, Kevin Wardman attempted a 52 yard field goal, but this was blocked at the line of scrimmage and time ran out.

  Senators pay for mistakes

Birmingham Bulls 42 Gateshead Senators 19

One consolation for Gateshead in this loss was that the offense played well and scored more points against the Bulls than anybody else this season. Unusually for the Senators, it was errors on defense and also special teams that cost. One can often get away with the odd mistake, but not against the talented Bulls who exploited every chink the Senators' "D".

Kick off was late when Gateshead arrived late having suffered two separate bus breakdowns on both the original coach and the replacement, the journey taking seven hours altogether.

John Hartley's 40 yard TD

John Hartley's 40 yard TD

The game started well for Gateshead with Ian Storey's interception of Doug Cotterell on the Bulls' opening drive. Lee Fraser (7 of 14 for 141 yards, 3 sacks and 2 TDs) took the Senators to a 1st and goal with John Harrison (4 carries for 10 yards, 1 TD) going in from 4 yards. Gary Marshall's PAT was good to bring the score to 0-7. Birmingham were stung into an immediate response when Jason Kenyon's kick off was returned by Ed Winter deep into Gateshead territory with Will Powell going in from 4 yards. Nick Burt's kick was good to even the scores at 7-7. After a Bulls' fumble recovery, Ryan Holness's 28 yard run and another good Burt kick put the home side in the lead 14-7. Gateshead's offense was not to be outdone, and Lee Fraser found John Hartley (5 catches for 104 yards, 2 TDs) from 40 yards for a score. Marshall's kick was just wide, the first quarter ending with a tantalising 14-13 scoreline.

The weather closed in during the second quarter with sudden squally showers, which perhaps contributed to a succession of traded punts. It was only after the two minute warning that the game livened up again with Stephen Green's long sack of Cotterell, but Birmingham saw a flaw in the Gateshead "D" and came straight back with Holness's option pass deep to Mark Cohen for a 65 yard score. Burt's kick made the half time score 21-13.

Much of the third quarter was played in a downpour but the Bulls continued to sparkle having the advantage now of playing downhill on the sloping field. Cotterell's pass to Roland Quayle from 3 yards and another perfect PAT from Burt boosted the Birmingham lead to 28-13. The Senators' drive was stopped when Kevin Mills sacked Lee Fraser for a 10 yard loss, forcing Marshall to punt. The remainder of the quarter was spent trading punts.

In the fourth quarter the sun came out, but not for Gateshead. Holness broke out for a 65 yard TD run, Burt was perfect again for a 35-13 scoreline. The Senators couldn't move and Gary Marshall had to punt again. Still fighting, the Senators' "D" forced the Bulls to punt, but were caught out by Mark Cohen's fake when he caught the snap and ran for the first down. John Hartley made amends with an interception of Cotterell and a 26 yard return. He immediately capitalised by catching Fraser's pass for a 36 yard touchdown. Gateshead tried for two, but failed, leaving the score at 35-19.

A larger version

The Dutch champions, Hilversum Hurricanes, travelled to Gateshead this weekend to take on yet again the 1999 UK Division one Champion Gateshead Senators. Having always been just beaten by Gateshead in successive tournaments in Holland, the visitors were determined to defeat Gateshead on their own territory.

In the event, the game often resembled mud wrestling as much as American football. In heavy rain showers the centre of the Blaydon field became churned to a grassless brown quagmire, and to make it worse, such was the even balance of the two teams, that most of the play took place in the midfield area.

David Nimmins kicked off for Gateshead and the Senator's 'D' held Hilversum to 4 and out, with the Dutch punting. The Senators' possession also ended with a Gary Marshall punt. The two teams spent the rest of the first quarter trading punts, except for two attempts by Hilversum of fourth down, both of which were unsuccessful. Marshall at QB for the Senators was unable to probe any weakness in the determined Dutch defense.

In the second quarter, play at last got away from midfield when Hilversum recovered a Gateshead fumble and drove to the Senators' 5 yard line. But Mark Sloan scooped a vital fumble recovery and stopped the Dutch drive dead. A later Hilversum threat was also stopped by a fumble recovery of the wet ball by Mikey Rumney before the half.

The third quarter was dominated by rain and strong winds, neither team able to progress the ball beyond the mudbath of midfield.

The final quarter continued in much the same vein as the as the third, until the weather cleared. Inside the two minute warning, Marshall's punt pushed Hilversum back to their own 10 yard line, But their drive from danger got nowhere when Mark Sloan again came up trumps with a fumble recovery to give Gateshead the ball just ten yards out. But Gary Marshall looking for the six points was intercepted in the end zone. Returning upfield, the Dutch defender was met by a swarm of Senators and in the melee, Gateshead recovered the ensuing fumble, again at the ten yard line. On the next play, Marshall faked, dumped the ball to Lee Fraser, playing in the backfield for the day, who used his passing skill to find Kev Ramsay at the back of the endzone. But Geordie jubilation was cut short when the catch was disallowed and on fourth down, with only seconds on the clock, Marshall set for a 27 yard field goal attempt. Snap and hold were good, and Marshall's kick was cleanly through the uprights for three points as time expired.

Senators' 2000 Awards

Presentation Night at "The Schooner"

Gateshead Senators held their annual Presentation Night at The Schooner Inn, South Shore Road, Gateshead in December. The Schooner Inn has provided post game hospitality for visiting teams for some years and as previously, was the natural choice for this event.

The evening was a great success as the 2000 season was reviewed. It was successful for the Senators, once again reaching the playoffs, but not able to repeat the Championship of 1999.
