From the Vicar

A lot of people seem to be worried about the state of the Church, and the Anglican Church in particular, and many worry about the condition of the Church of England within that. Our congregations seem to be falling (although not here) and our finances are far from sound; some criticise the appointment of homosexual bishops, some criticise the failure to appoint one. You may be asked about these things: I know I am. And what can we say? Well, very little. It is no good worrying about things you cannot change - and I have no influence over, for example, the choice of American bishops, or even Oxford ones. On the other hand it is clearly wrong not to use what influence you do have, even though it may be small. For example, I cannot solve the whole of the Church of England's funding crisis, but I can pray about my own level of giving and consider increasing it, as many of us did in our recent funding campaign.

However, the important thing is simply to go on faithfully ourselves, what ever is going on elsewhere. Keep praying, keep reading the Bible, keep attending worship and receiving the Holy Communion, keep doing good works in gratitude for what God has done for you, and do pray for those who do have to make the decisions in the Church. What matters first of all is to respond to the love of God. We were put here primarily to love our creator and all else in our life of faith must grow out of that. Start there, do not start with ecclesiastical politics or even with what look like firm traditions or principles, for it was adherence to principles and traditions that persuaded the authorities in first-century Palestine to crucify Love itself. "The first commandment is this: you shall love the Lord your God ..."

Mark Warrick

This year we shall start the new term with our Teddy Bear's Picnic, so bring along a little food and drink (we'll provide tea for the adults and will have some squash as well for any children who don't bring anything), and your teddy or other cuddly toy. There will be short prayers as well. We meet again a fortnight later in church as usual, followed by drink and biscuit and playtime in the Hall, finishing in time to meet older children from school.

News From The Tower

It is that time of year again when out come the barbeques. On Saturday 2 August our captain, Richard and his lovely lady Sue, entertained us when we held our annual barbeque. The event was attended by 22 people, which included ringers and their partners and friends. All had an enjoyable evening.

Our learner ringers, Eileen and Grace, are making good progress, with Eileen receiving a certificate for her recent improvement in handling her bell.

We have had visitors from the Thrapston area and The Rambling Ringers in recent weeks. We also have had various visitors on practice evenings from other local towers and Kent.

Ringing practice for learners and experienced ringers on Friday evenings is at 7.30.

COMMUNICATION

The Oxford Dictionary's definition of communication is the act of imparting news to one another, this being a very important and essential part of our fellowship as Christians. It is also something we overlook, perhaps and may not be very good at.

It is sometime since we wrote in this magazine inviting anyone who has any concerns or would like the Prayer Group to pray about something on their behalf.

Please let Mark, Sonia or myself know of anyone you know who needs our prayers or indeed may like a visit.

In the words of Dorothy Kerin, I quote. "Remember God hears our every prayer and anwers all, His Love makes time and ways His own."

Bernard Babb

DOROTHY KERIN

Dorothy Kerin was a 22-year old invalid living in London when a sudden miraculous cure restored her to immediate health after a lingering illness of tubercular meningitis, which then was a terminal condition - earning her national attention and press headlines of "Miracle Girl".

Dorothy Kerin's personal experience of the living Christ turning her life around - literally taking her from death to a perfectly healthy life in a moment - set her on a course of wanting to tell the world what had happened to her, and setting up a place where others could come to find the same healing that she had herself received.

Helped by a core of dedicated and committed followers after the Second World War, Dorothy Kerin successively established three homes of prayer and healing in southern England. In 1948, she was able to develop the land and buildings making up the core of the present day Burrswood estate. All the funding and financial support came via donations from supporters. Throughout her life, Dorothy Kerin attracted a widespread following - and some measure of controversy - for her pioneering work in Christian healing. In later years, she drew support and praise from worldwide sources ranging from Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Cosmo Lang to the American evangelist, Dr. Norman Vincent Peale.

Looking for a recipe?

Over the last few year Margaret Flegg has contributed a lot of recipes to this magazine, all of them very attractive. Whether you have carefully filed them or not, it is possible to find Margaret's recipes using the archived Internet edition of Priory News and searching for a recipe name or an ingredient. If you look at the left-hand side of this page you will see the Priory News Archive with a simple search engine: type in what you're looking for and click "Go". You will be presented with a list of the issues that mention that word, with the context in which it is mentioned. For example, searching for "beef" yields recipes in April 2001 and 2002 as well as two articles on farming and on food in Malaysia!
