The Church has perhaps been too keen to conform to a worldly image to attract what it sees as worldly people. But we need to be more discerning than that and remember our spiritual roots. Jesus was nothing if not a healer and spiritual guide, and yet although people are hungry for spiritual things, so few turn to his Church for spiritual food.
I know nothing about Reiki except what is expressed in its practitioners' publicity. They claim to harness some "universal life force energy" for healing and one such local practitioner offers house blessings and spiritual guidance. It costs £25 for a basic healing treatment (reduction for the disabled!), and a house blessing is £35.
You could ask you parish priest who will do all of this for no charge, calling not on some impersonal force but on the almighty, all-loving creator God who in Christ conquered all that is evil in the world. Why pay more and receive less?
I fear there may be an answer, and that answer may lie in our unwillingness to let go and be serious about spiritual reality. The Church does not demand payment (although gifts are most certainly welcome), but God demands a response. You pay your Reiki fees and go home owing nothing, but although you pay nothing to God, you go home owing him your love. To pay money is easier, but gives only a partial solution: to give God your love in return for his will bring a deep joy and true spiritual health that nothing can match. Why settle for less?
Many thanks to all of those who kindly filled CMS boxes this year. Your generosity has enabled us to send a total of £44.15 to CMS headquarters to be used in their worldwide missionary work.

Following a suggestion from a member of the congregation, we are offering a parish Christmas card for sale this year.
The front of the card shows the Priory Church, whilst the interior is a muted view of the bridge overprinted with a text from St Luke and the message 'Wishing you peace and joy at Christmas'.
The cards, which measure 8.3in x 5.8in (A5), come with self- sealing envelopes and cost 75p each.
A sample card and further details are available in church (please see Roger or Liz Bridgeman).

Many thanks to all of you who filled in the questionnaire about the sort of books and related items you would like available from our relaunched bookstall.
As well as a variety of books, including daily prayer guides and children's books, new suggestions have included advent calendars and seasonal books.
Although we can't guarantee to cover every idea, we will endeavour to have a good selection.
The bookstall will be in church for two consecutive Sundays: 19th and 26th October. If there is enough interest, it may become an ongoing facility. I do hope you will support us.
The Trustees have approved the payment of Book Grants to undergraduate students resident in Deeping St. James who are in full- time education at College or University. The GRANTS are currently £75 for the first year and £50 for each of the second and third years.

Chestnut mushrooms?? Any relation to conkers? I know its the season......Dave
Cut the chicken breasts into thin slices. Thinly slice the onion. Halve mushrooms through the stalk.
Melt the butter and gently fry the chicken strips, stirring, for 5 minutes, or until they have lost their pinkness. Lift out with a slotted spoon. Add the onion and fry gently for about 8 minutes. Add mushrooms and fry for 2 minutes. Return the chicken with the stock. Bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through. Serve immediately, sprinkled with paprika.
This dish should be served with boiled rice mixed with a tbs of chopped parsley.
Over the last few year Margaret Flegg has contributed a lot of recipes to this magazine, all of them very attractive. Whether you have carefully filed them or not, it is possible to find Margaret's recipes using the archived Internet edition of Priory News and searching for a recipe name or an ingredient. If you look at the left-hand side of this page you will see the Priory News Archive with a simple search engine: type in what you're looking for and click "Go". You will be presented with a list of the issues that mention that word, with the context in which it is mentioned. For example, searching for "beef" yields recipes in April 2001 and 2002 as well as two articles on farming and on food in Malaysia!
