All the World's a Harvest

Even if our thoughts and feelings are far removed from the land in this age of factories and supermarkets, there is still much to occupy our prayer life at the traditional harvest time. As we thank God for our food and for those who produce it and deliver it to us, we may find ourselves thanking him for all that we need and enjoy in life, and for life itself. All in this world and beyond exists because God wills it to exist, and he sustains all in existence. It is awesome to think that it is through God's self-giving love that we have life, and when we respond at harvest time by bringing to God through his Church the best of our own "harvest", then we are acting out our response of thanks for life. It is an annual special reminder of what we do each time we do a favour for someone to whom we owe nothing, each time we pledge our money to the Church collection or to some charity, each time we spend our time in prayer, Bible study or worship, giving back to God in gratitude a token of the good things he has given us. In a sense, then, everything is a harvest, and every day a harvest thanksgiving. As a Canon of Lincoln I once knew used to say at mealtimes, "Thank God for all," a short "grace" but an accurate one!

Remembering Our Loved Ones

Sunday 3rd November at 3pm

Following the success of last year's All Saints Sunday memorial service we shall be holding a similar service this year at which we can each commemorate our departed loved ones on Sunday afternoon 3rd November. This will be in addition to the Requiem Eucharist on 2nd November at which the departed will be remembered by name on request.

If you have lost a loved one recently, or not so recently, and would like to take time out to remember them before God, then this service may meet your needs. There is no need to book: simply turn up and take part as much or as little as you wish in this simple service of hymns, readings and prayers.

The Carpets

Some of us were rather shocked to arrive at church recently to find that the carpets, which had been there for thirty years, had been removed. The members of our fabric committee had taken up the carpets on the recommendation of the contractors who had been restoring the floor after the outbreak of dry rot because the carpets, and the underlay in particular, had been keeping the floor damp at the back of the church, and also because in places in the main aisle the carpet itself had become dangerous, leading to a number of tripping accidents.

The question now is whether to replace the carpet, without underlay, in the aisles (it is probably best not replaced at the back of the church), or to leave the floor bare. The PCC would be grateful to receive people's comments on what they would prefer, so that the decision can be made with some idea in mind of what people would like to happen. Meanwhile, we shall also have take the advice of our Archdeacon and consider the condition of the carpet as well as the state of the floor. We shall also have to see how it affects the noise level.

Church Coffee Group.

The Autumn coffee morning on 12th September raised £143-00 for funds, the committee thank all those who came and helped in its success.

RELAX WITH THE CLASSICS

An evening of music to suit most tastes is to be held on Saturday 19th October in the Vicarage from 8 pm.

Tickets £2.50 (or a donation) are available from Bernard Babb.

All proceeds will be donated to the Organ Fund.

A Little Light Relief

These are actual clippings from church newspapers (Probably from America). It's amazing what a little proof-reading would provide.

Announcement in the church bulletin for a National PRAYER & FASTING Conference: "The cost for attending the Fasting and Prayer Conference includes meals."

"Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Don't forget your husbands."

It's not what you gather, but what you scatter that tells what kind of life you have lived.

COOKING WITH MARGARET

Sounds like Fish, Chips and Peas cooked differently!!!!
but delicious

Potato & Salmon Grill

1. Boil the potatoes in salted water for about 10 minutes until almost tender but not breaking up. Tip in the frozen peas and simmer for another 2-3 minutes. Drain well, then tip into a mixing bowl. Turn on the grill to high.

2. Drain the salmon and flake it into chunks, then gently toss with potatoes and peas. Season to taste and spoon into a flameproof dish.

3. Roughly spread the creme fraiche on top and scatter with cheese. Grill for a few minutes until bubbling and golden.

Tuna may be used instead of salmon. Takes about 25 mins and serves 4.
