From the Vicar

At Pentecost, 19th May, we celebrate the Church's birthday. Not our parish church's, but the whole, world-wide Church of Christ. The Church was born not when a group of human beings decided to start a new community but when God poured out his Holy Spirit on a group of frightened disciples and gave them new gifts to go out into the world and live out the Kingdom values they were to preach.

How much do we, the Church of the 21st Century, resemble that early, Spirit-filled, enthusiastic Church of the 1st Century? The gift of the Holy Spirit is not a simple concept to grasp. In the Bible we read of the Spirit coming to particular individuals at particular times to do certain things, but we also read of him living in people and changing their lives. Being filled with the Spirit is in one sense an instant thing, and yet in another sense a continuous thing. At the recent Alpha Conference which I attended, Nicky Gumbel tried to explain it as not like filling a cup with water, which, once done is done, but more like filling a balloon with air. Even when "full", you can keep on filling a balloon. Unlike a balloon, however, we have an infinite capacity for being filled with God's Spirit, so even if you know that God is active in your own life, even if you know his Spirit lives in you, you can go on praying to be filled more and more, that you may be a better servant and may respond more to his infinite love.

All Christians have the Spirit living in them, that is the promise of Baptism. At Confirmation we pray again for the coming of the Spirit, as we do indeed at the Holy Communion every time we celebrate it. But as individuals we can pray every day to be filled with the Spirit, and we are promised that our heavenly Father will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask. Then there is no imagining what you might achieve for him!

News From The Tower

Tuesday April 9 the bells were rung half muffled in commemoration of the Queen Mother. Our thoughts at the time were with all the other members other family.

On April 12 we held a successful open evening at the tower when some 13 visitors were shown the bells in the belfry and all had a go at ringing a bell.

Several have shown some interest in wanting to learn to ring and were invited to return on any Friday night that they are available. Snack food and soft drinks were laid on for the occasion, and it is our intention to hold another such evening later in the year.

In the interim, if anyone wishes to leam the skills of bell ringing, they will be most welcome any Friday between 7.30 and 9.00 pm.

Dear All

You may have been a participant in the highly successful 1999 Deepings in Bloom event. Deepings Gardening Club (DGC) has inherited all of the background information and is staging a Golden Jubilee version this year.

We hope you may consider welcoming the public to your garden in 2002.

The Golden Jubilee event will be staged over the weekend of 27/28 July. The core activity again will be a series of gardens open to the public from 1 - 5pm on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. DGC has formed a small working party to sponsor and co-ordinate the event this year. We stress, however, that ALL gardeners are welcome, not just members of the club. We seek all kinds and sizes of gardens, new, old, or under reclamation.

Last time the event was run specifically in aid of the Deepings united churches Millennium Candles project. This year our aim is to involve as many local charities, church and social groups as possible, to broaden the appeal of the event and create greater publicity for The Deepings and (he participating groups. Any profit from the event will be shared amongst participating groups. We have received some core funding from Market Deeping Town Council and Deeping St James Parish Council and we have applied for a Lottery grant. Any such donations offset expenses, allowing for a greater local charitable distribution.

Our outline programme already includes:

(Up to 20) Gardens Open to the Public (PLEASE MAKE YOUR APPLICATION NOW) The mayor of Market Deeping will accompany the Deepings Carnival Queen around gardens open in Market Deeping and the chairman of DSJ Parish Council will accompany the Rose Queen around gardens in Deeping St James and Deeping Gate. Both tours will conclude at the Community Centre.

Coronation Hall (One of two administrative bases for the event weekend) Craft show both days Cream teas served (by WI?) both afternoons Floral Dance for over-18s Saturday evening

Deepings Community Centre (The other administrative base) Flower beds established and maintained by Deepings Gardening Club Plans and progress towards children's play area, sensory garden and wildlife garden Cream teas served by Deepings Red Cross both afternoons

Golden Jubilee Teddy Bears FunDay & Picnic Staged on the John Eve Playing Field by Deepings Lions on Sunday 28 July Record attempt for "The largest Teddy Bears Picnic"

Town Centre Hanging Baskets competition staged by Deepings Town Centre Management Partnership

For an application form please apply to the above, and I will be pleased answer any questions or respond to any suggestions. Please let me know soon if you are prepared to be involved this year.

Post Script

I was feeling happy and relaxed as my eight-year-old pupils filed past me into school. Their cheerful faces and busy chatter heralded another good day.

One boy stopped, looked me straight in the eye and, smiling, said 'I saw you on television last night, Mrs Washbrooke'. 'Oh, did you, Luke?' I replied, smiling back.He hung up his coat and then returned. I must admit that I wondered what he would say next. After all, it's not every day that your teacher appears 'Stark Naked' on television!

I needn't have worried. 'You were talking about your faith, weren't you?' 'Yes, Luke,' I replied, 'I was'.

Bet Washbrooke.

PS: If anyone who missed the programme would like to see it, please let me know.
