From the Vicar

Of Roses and Queens

June is almost upon us as I write - or at least it must be if the magazine team is baying for my writing - and thoughts have for some time been on the arrangements for this year's Rose & Sweet Pea Show and the selection of the new Rose Queen.

The Show is probably the most time-consuming thing we do and is our most significant single community event as a parish church, and yet one may well ask where it touches our work as the Body of Christ: why is the Church involved in an event like this?

It generates income, of course, which can be used for the rest of our mission and ministry, but it is more than a fund-raising exercise and is something to which many of us enjoy contributing a lot of time and hard work. It is a tradition in itself, and with value of its own, quite apart from the funds it raises. In a village like ours there are still some of us engaged in agriculture and horticulture, and there are many who enjoy gardening, and if the Church is to be effective as a community Church then it must be involved in these areas of life and celebrate them with the people. God has given us the world to enjoy, and to enjoy it with others is our privilege as his Church.

Aside from the horticultural show, the garden fete is a party to which we welcome all the community to celebrate God's gifts to us in creation and just to be the community eating, drinking and playing together. Now I must be off: I have a lawn to cut and some shrubbery to tidy ....

CHURCH WATCH

We hope to keep the church open in the daytime for people to come and pray or visit outside service hours - but it does depend on people being available.

A rota is now on the noticeboard at the back of church. If you can spare a little time for this valuable service, please fill your in against a particular time slot. The key may be collected by prior arrangement from the Vicar or Churchwardens.

A notice giving times of opening will then be posted both in the porch and on the church noticeboards..

EASTER FLOWERS

Joan Dyke would like to thank everyone who came and helped with flowers for Easter. The Church looked wonderful and your help was especially welcome while Joan was incapacitated.

Help! I'm Eleven!

Our present children's groups cater very well for children from age 3 years to the end of primary school, and the numbers have been growing at varying rates since we started Explorers, Climbers and Scramblers two years ago. We now have a number of children who are at the very top end of our age range and to cater for their needs a new group will be starting this month.

Pathfinders will cater for ages 11-14 years and will meet on Sunday evenings at 7.30pm, normally at the Vicarage, recognising that many young people in this age group will have ministries in church as choristers, servers etc., or helping with younger children. The groups will be very different from the morning children's groups and will provide an opportunity for discussion of topics of importance to those who are approaching adulthood, and will also form the foundation for confirmation preparation for any members who wish to take that step.

There will also be several social events, and we look forward to receiving suggestions from group members. A leaflet will be available soon giving full details, and anyone aged between 11 and 14 will be welcome to come along, whether they have been involved with Explorers or not. There will be no charge, but there will be a collection, and there will be a 'tuck shop'.

ROSE AND SWEET PEA SHOW

Raffle

The raffle at this year's Show which will be held on Saturday 24th June has some super prizes including a fully fitted wicker picnic basket for four people. It includes china, cutlery, flasks and all the other accessories to make a delightful picnic.

Also in the raffle is a tartan waterproofed picnic rug, garden furniture and a sweet cuddly toy.

If you have any further prizes or would like to give a donation towards further prizes, please hand them to Simon or Sonia Marshall. Tickets are available now from Simon (346420) or Joy Cunningham (343438), your help in selling a few books of tickets would be greatly appreciated.

Refreshments

We make the usual appeal for cakes for the Refreshments Stall. This has traditionally brought in the greatest amount of money for the Church, second only to the raffle, and this has been mostly due to the provisions given by yourselves. Please give your gifts to Val Wilde (344991) or Margaret Flegg (347197) or bring them on the day.
