Last month Mark and I were privileged to attend the conference 'A Kingdom Calling' - the first gathering of all clergy of the diocese for some years.
The 'New Era' we are moving into presents us with several challenges of which finance is only one; over the three days of the conference we were to look at the even more important question of how to respond spiritually to a rapidly changing society of which 'instant access' is a prime feature.
In the wilderness of change and uncertainty we seem to be moving through, (in many ways similar to the experiences of Israel which we have been studying in the Book of Numbers) we have real grounds for hope: the faithfulness of God to his people; also a powerful resource: God's word in scripture. With God's direction we can come to understand and hopefully manage the risks as we move forward.
Worship was an integral part of each day of the conference and to be part of a group of more than two hundred clergy praising God together was an experience I shall never forget - especially the sight of three bishops concelebrating the Eucharist on St. Barnabas Day, assisted by the archdeacons. Barnabas was noted for his role of encouraging others in their faith and mission - What a note on which to end as we returned to our parishes!
oremus bible browser to prepare your readingHaving served her year as Deacon, Sonia is to be ordained Priest at Lincoln Cathedral on Sunday 4th July, and there will be some changes to our pattern of worship on that day to enable us to celebrate this important occasion in her life and the life of our church and parish.
The 8am Holy Communion will take place as usual, but without a sermon, so that the Vicar can get away to Lincoln at a reasonable time. Meanwhile there will be a coach organized to take to Lincoln all who wish to attend the Ordination service. There will be no service at 10am at Deeping St James.
The Sung Eucharist will be at 6pm at which Sonia will preside for the first time. After that service there will be a bring-and-share supper in the Church Hall, arranged by the Social Committee.
Full details of the day will be published in due course, with coach fare, departure times, arrangements for the supper, etc., but meanwhile you may like to make a note in your diary of the service times and to keep the day free!
Serves 4
Preheat grill. Rinse strawberries and slice if large. Place in base of four ramekins. Sprinkle with liqueur. Cover with crème fraîche, then chill for at least 30 minutes. Sprinkle sugar over the top and place under grill. Cook for 3-5 minutes, or until sugar melts; turn frequently to grill evenly. Chill for 30 minutes then serve.
