From the Curate
Dear friends,
Can you remember the day when you passed your driving test? Until that day you couldn't go out without your instructor or a qualified driver, but afterwards the world (or at any rate, the local roads) were your oyster. No doubt you also celebrated the occasion in an appropriate way.
We have two big occasions to celebrate this month in the Church: Ascension and Pentecost. The days of instruction are over, Christ returns to his place with the Father and the disciples are to spread the good news all over the world, though not quite alone. We have Christ's promise through the Holy Spirit to be with us in every generation…to he end of time.
Quite appropriately there are great opportunities for mission this month. 10th May is the date set for the Turn on the Tap walk and the very next day, 11th may (Pentecost) hails the start of Christian Aid Week with a special lunch in the Church Hall…more details in the pages of this magazine.
Don't forget also to make a diary note for Thursday, 1st May: Ascension Day. This day, a day not to be missed according to catholic theology, is an important feast, the reverse of the incarnation (Christmas), but not so much a departure as the first step in the creation of a worldwide mission. Christ returns to his Father's side, but now we, through him, can stand before God and pray as he prays.
Merry Ascension Day!
Sonia Marshall

MISSION MATTERS
Turn on the Tap - The Deepings `Walk for Water`
10 May 2008
The Priory Church, Deeping St. James is organising a 4-mile walk on Saturday 10 May as part of the national Turn on the Tap Walk for Water Day.
Why 4 miles? Well that is the average distance walked by women and children in Africa to obtain fresh water and the Turn on the Tap Campaign is working to try and bring clean drinking water into their villages.
So we are asking you to bring the dog, bring the kids, bring your wellies and join us. The walk is starting at The Waterton Arms, Deeping St. James at 11 am. It will cost £2 a head (for adults only) and all monies collected with go direct to the Turn on the Tap Campaign which is being run by The Samaritans Purse. We shall take a circular route - and have a system in place to collect those who fall by the wayside - the walk ending at The Waterton Arms where we can have a drink and/or snacks or lunch. The Vicar has kindly offered the use of the Vicarage lawn for those wishing to picnic.
We have sponsorship forms, if you feel you could persuade people to sponsor you for this event - thus increasing the amount we could collect.
We want so much to make it a `Deepings Thing` and hope you will respond and also help to spread the word.
For sponsorship forms, offers of help or any further information please contact Anne or George Smart on 01778-342047 or e-mail me.

News from Explorers, Climbers and Scramblers
The children have been discovering more about our Creator God by looking in detail at how He made the world. Explorers have grappled with the idea of making 'something out of nothing', as we all do, and enjoyed making a model of the world's longest animal and smelliest animal. Ask an Explorer if you want to know which they are! We have been thinking about our responsibility to look after our part of the world and how we can do this. Climbers and Scramblers have used their artistic talents to show how the world was made in several steps.
It seems a long time ago now, but we would like to thank all those members of the Priory Church congregation who donated various items for our Good Friday and Easter Activities. We had a wonderful time, and so did other children who joined us on the day. We hope you like the Easter chicks which we made then, and which helped to decorate the Church during the Clorious Fifty Days.
Amanda, one of our Assistants at Climbers and Scramblers, will be working with Action Aid in October to build a house for the Kamaiya people of Bardia, one of the poorest areas of Nepal. They are freed former bonded labourers who are in desperate need of shelter. We are planning to have another fund-raising event to support this work, so please keep 11th May after Church free to support our 'buy a brick' stall when cakes, sweets and other lovely things will be on sale. Our model house will also be there if you would like to make a donation.
We find soft margarine containers - in particular the 1kg size - very useful, so if you can help us by leaving any you might have in our box at the back of Church we would be very grateful. Thank you.
Explorers (7 - 11), Climbers (5 - 7) and Scramblers (under 5) meet every Sunday morning (except during the Summer holiday period) at 9.50am in the Church Hall. They join older worshippers in Church for their blessing, final hymn and refreshments. New members are always welcome. Please contact Andrea (Climbers and Scramblers) on 344926 or Alison (Explorers) on 345890 for more details.
News From The Tower
Our Social Secretary (Brenda) organised a trip to the London Palladium to see "The Sound Of Music". The day started with twelve of us travelling by train to London, four of us had a quick look around the new St Pancras station before journeying on. We then had time to take tea at Liberty's before making our way to the theatre. The show was very good and every one in the party enjoyed it. We then had an excellent dinner in a little Italian restaurant just down the road to the Palladium before making our way back home. A good time had by all, thanks to Brenda.
Congratulations to Jo Shamma who rang her first quarter peal on the 29 March. Jo has been ringing with us for the past 2 to 3 years and did very well on the day. Well done Jo!
