From the Vicar

"When you're smiling," so the old song goes, "the whole world smiles with you," and this is brought to my mind each spring ("Sad!", did I hear some of our younger readers utter??) when the whole world (well, the northern hemisphere anyway) seems to celebrate the new life of Easter with sunshine, flowers and all the signs of life bursting out again after the dark and cold of winter. Even the lawn-mower servicing bill and the thought of spending hours each week driving up and down the lawn cannot dampen my enthusiasm for this wonderful time of year when I can happily contemplate both the eternal life won for me by my saviour and the coming summer made for me by my creator.

I'd like to urge everyone to make a real effort to take in the significance of the story of what God has done for us in Christ by attending the great services which mark the central events of the story: Palm Sunday morning, Maundy Thursday evening, Good Friday morning and, supremely, Easter Sunday morning at 09:00 when all come together to celebrate the resurrection with song, light and sacrament. Alleluia!

Mark Warrick

EASTER DAY PARISH EUCHARIST

Please note that following last year's successful experiment, there will once again be just one Easter morning Eucharist, at 09:00, with lighting of the Easter Candle and Renewal of Baptismal Vows.

Spring Clean

If you can help clean the church ready for Easter, please let me know by phone, email or in person. Many hands make light work, so even if you can only spare half an hour I'd welcome your help.

Bet

Confirmation

There will be a Confirmation Service at Deeping St James on Thursday 22nd April at 19:30 at which the Bishop of Grantham will preside. The candidates are largely those who have completed the Alpha Course and are now going through a brief preparation course.

CHOIR KNEELERS

The Choir Kneelers are now ready to be worked on. If you are interested in making a kneeler or would like more details, please contact Kim Hallam (348178) or Liz Spratley (342401). You can either work the canvas, make–up the completed canvas into a kneeler or both.

Also if anyone would like to make a donation to help towards the cost of the kneelers please see either Liz or Kim.)

News from Explorers, Climbers and Scramblers

Our topic of 'People Jesus Met' included Nicodemus, the woman at the well, and Mary, Martha and Lazarus. Activities included making butterfly cakes to remind us that our new life with Jesus is much more fulfiling than without, in the same way that a butterfly is much more exciting to look at than a caterpillar. The raising of Lazarus gave us an opportunity to imitate first century burial techniques using loo rolls instead of bandages! We also looked at the miracle of the stilling of the storm and enjoyed producing an edible scene using blue jelly (sea) and squirty cream (rough waves). This proved more realistic than anticipated as the cream rapidly decreased in volume, much like the waves in the Gospel account.

If anyone has any books, games or puzzles which our older Climbers (aged 6 and 7) could enjoy they would make a welcome addition to our stock of toys which we use for a short period of time most Sunday mornings. Thank you.

Explorers (7 - 110, Climbers (5 - 7) and SCramblers (under 5) meet every Sunday morning at 9.50am in the Church Hall. They join older worshippers in Church for their blessing, final hymn and refreshments. New members are always welcome. Please contact Andrea (Climbers and Scramblers) on 344926 or Alison (Explorers) on 345890 for more details.

News from the Tower

The final stretch of stairway has now been fitted with its handrail. The staircase up the lower has now got a handrail fitted from top to bottom.

We had sufficient ringers available this month for a practice on the West Deeping bells. We like to keep these bells rung at least once a month.

For those who are not aware, the bells in Langtoft Church have at last been refurbished and re-hung. They have not been rung since 1918.

The ringers and their friends had another enjoyable social outing - this time it was Ten Pin Bowling.

Currently we are able to take on board one more novice ringer. INTERESTED? Then ring Richard on 01778 343498.

The ringers wish Bernard a happy "retirement" from his duties as Churchwarden. Well done Bernard.

A Touch of Humour

A man and his wife were having an argument about who should brew the coffee each morning. The wife said, "You should do it because you get up first, and then we don't have to wait as long to get our coffee."

The husband said, "You're in charge of cooking around here and you should do it, because that is your job, and I can just wait for my coffee."

Wife replies, "No, you should do it, and besides, it is in the Bible that the man should do the coffee."

Husband replies, "I can't believe that, show me."

So she fetched the Bible, and opened the New Testament and showed him at the top of several pages, that it indeed says...."HEBREWS"

COOKING WITH MARGARET

I assume Margaret has been looking at me again!!! Low Fat?

MARINATED CHICKEN

Serves 4 (Low fat dish)

Mix together rind and juice of orange and lemon, the honey, balsamic vinegar, tomato purée, oregano and seasoning in a shallow ovenproof dish. Score flesh of chicken breasts using a sharp knife. Add chicken pieces to marinade and coat all over. Cover dish with cling film and marinate for at least 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, preheat oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas 6.

Cook chicken for 30 minutes, or until juices run clear when the thickest part is pierced with the tip of a knife. Transfer to a serving plate.

Looking for a recipe?

Over the last few year Margaret Flegg has contributed a lot of recipes to this magazine, all of them very attractive. Whether you have carefully filed them or not, it is possible to find Margaret's recipes using the archived Internet edition of Priory News and searching for a recipe name or an ingredient. If you look at the left-hand side of this page you will see the Priory News Archive with a simple search engine: type in what you're looking for and click "Go". You will be presented with a list of the issues that mention that word, with the context in which it is mentioned.
