In the Christian Songwriters' Group mailing list Phillip Wages (somewhat jokily) suggested group-writing a song starting with the couplet "Jesus is my Novocaine. He takes away all my pain". A couple of other members pointed out that that was not the way it was. I got intrigued, and this congregational song was the result (with valuable help from others - particularly Lynn Cooley and Janie Ivey). It has its weaknesses, but recently proved a great asset to worship themed around our response to pain and suffering)

Lyrics (by Michael Lehr)

Some say that he's like Novocaine, a simple drug to ease the pain
of those who cannot live without a crutch.
But that is not the way it feels: by sharing in our pain he heals
those deeper wounds that nothing else can touch.

Oh no! Not Novocaine. He doesn't take away all pain,
but uses it to draw us to the cross.
We share his victory and, looking to eternity,
rejoice through every kind of loss.

This world can be a place of fears, grow bitter as advancing years
increase the heavy load of grief and pain.
But Jesus has the power to free, bring peace if not tranquillity,
and in his love we've everything to gain.

We were not made to live alone, to bear life's burdens on our own,
but sharing with each other and with him.
His words ring out for all to hear: "In every trouble I am near".
His presence gives a deeper peace within.

Lord, draw us to your cross. Lord, heal us by your cross
Lord, draw us to your cross. Lord, heal us by your cross

The world may treat this faith with scorn, and mock all claims to be reborn,
But nothing can displace the Father's care.
We only have to walk his road, and offer up each heavy load
to find that he's beside us everywhere.

Lord, draw us to your cross. Lord, heal us by your cross.
Lord, draw us to your cross. Lord, heal us by your cross.
Lord, heal us by your cross.
