HOUSE OF CARDS

(By Janie Ivey and Michael Lehr)

The lyrics for this song were inspired by a phrase of C.S Lewis in his book “A Grief Observed”. In the book he speaks of how he suddenly feels about the edifice of his faith when it is put to the extreme emotional testing of the death of his wife, and recognises that if it can't cope with the totality of life and death it is not a true faith. I think the lyrics speak for themselves, and are true to what Lewis was talking about even though very different from the way he expressed it.

Lyrics (by Janie Ivey and Michael Lehr)

Woke up this mornin' with a crack in my heart,
Tryin' to sleep off what's tearin' me apart.
Came unexpected, hit me right between the eyes,
And now I'm shakin' my fists at your sky.
House of cards

Hey, life ain't easy, but so I believed -
I thought I had an ace up my sleeve.
Had me some good faith, the stuff to see me through,
Until this heartache split me in two

House of cards
Gonna toss this piety
House of cards
Gotta ditch this faith in me
House of cards
Hafta crush this phoney crown
House of cards
Let it all fall down

Well, what You want now, blue heart and empty hands?
That's what you got here, so take me as I am.
I'm on my knees, yeah, what more can I say?
Wrap up this bare heart and throw the rest away.

House of cards ...
