This carving was made in direct response to the challenge of an odd-shaped
log given to me by a colleague.
The log was a slice through the many-stranded trunk of the very gnarled
old tree, with holes formed by strands which has rejoined the trunk higher
up. This has yielded a carving which is almost semi-relief in nature.
The highly intricate pattern in the grain and the blemishes gives a rich
overall effect which perfectly matches the rich warm reddish-brown
colour of the yew. This is heightened by the varied surface texture which
changes from the rough flames to the smooth polished skin of
the leg and chest.
A movie (~350Kb) is
available for this sculpture which gives a better three-dimensional impression.
