Sycamore is famous for the rich “spalting” patterns produced by discoloration of the wood as bacterial and fungal growth start in the wood. When the wood dries during seasoning, this activity ceases, but the remaining coloration of black, brown and green give a patterning which is much sought after by furniture-makers and sculptors alike.
In this small driftwood sculpture, created from the twist in a long branch. The internal shape, created around a blemish area, uncovered a beautiful spalting pattern which creates a lively contrast to the pale wood.
A movie

impression.
