Bramfield lies some 2 miles south of Halesworth on the A144 road. Follow the A12 north from Ipswich for some 28 miles and take the left turn onto the A144 about 2 miles north of Yoxford. Bramfield is the first village you come to. The chuch lies just behind the Queen's Head Public House on the west side of the road. Churches with round towers are rare in Britain apart from Norfolk and Suffolk. There are nearly 200 examples in these counties. The tower is unique in Suffolk as it is detached from the church. Beccles is detached but is square. The tower is probably Norman around the 12th Century and is 43 foot 6 inches high and with wall thickness of 4 foot 6 inches. There are 5 bells the earliest dayting from 1440 . The church, itself, is entirely 14th century and replaced one that was mentioned in the domesday book of 1086. Across the road from the church is a curious wall which is crinkled in appearance, known locally as a crinkle-crankle wall. See picture. The village lies only 6 miles from the sea at Walberswick and is not far from Minsmere Nature reserve. Good food is served at the Queens Head in Bramfield.
