Jowett Javelin Nose

The Jowett Javelin was built in Bradford, Yorkshire, from about 1946 to 1953.  It was a high performance car in its day, the horizontally opposed flat-four cylinder 1486cc engine powered this sleek car weighing just a little under a ton from 0 to 50mph in just 15.4 seconds, and from there to 70mph in a further 15 seconds, with a top speed of 80mph. This was much faster than most other cars of that era, and in 1949, the first full year of production with 5,450 Javelins rolling off the production line (compared with 1,558 for the 1946-1948 development period), the Jowett Javelin won the 1.5 litre class Monte Carlo Rally, and also the 2 litre class Spa 24-hour race in Belgium.  It enjoyed a further three years of success, with 5,551 being built in 1950, 5,769 in 1951, and 4,060 in 1952.  Sadly, Jowett were in trouble by 1953 and only produced another 380 Javelins before production closed down for good.
