Knaresborough Monumental Inscriptions

Many of my ancestors came from, and their descendants still live in, the Knaresborough area. Of particular interest to me are the surnames (in no particular order) :- Smith, Wheelhouse, Kitching, Sweeting, Metcalfe, Pullan, Parvin, Harrison, Pape, Carter & Nelson. On Thursday 13th July, 2004, I spent a sunny afternoon wandering rather haphazardly around the cemetery and surrounds of St. John's Church, photographing every gravestone I could find with any of these names on (plus a couple of others which caught my eye for some reason), then later transcribed them as below. It is not a complete, exhaustive list, as I know of at least one stone I was looking for and couldn't find (see end of list) and I deliberately skipped a whole area of modern-looking gravestones in the cemetery because I was running short of time and was mainly interested in the older ones anyway (to photograph them before they disintegrate any further! - the newer ones will hopefully last a bit longer for next time I go on a photo trip there). My zig-zag route through the cemetery probably wasn't the best way to go about doing such a task either, but provided a pleasant afternoon's entertainment and out of the hundred or so photos I took, at least half a dozen provided valuable information for my family tree, so it was all worthwhile! If you think any of these are part of your family tree, I will gladly provide copies of the photos I took, via email. Contact details are on my home page.

Also one that one of my distant cousins found and photographed on a previous visit, but which somehow eluded me! :
