Scunthorpe Speedway
I’ve been a speedway fan for years, initially following Halifax
Speedway at the Shay in the era of the great Kenny Carter, with some
of my other favourites including Dougie “Flyer” Wyer, Steve Baker,
Martin “Mad Dog” Dixon... then Bradford Speedway and Gary Havelock,
Sean Wilson... Middlesbrough Speedway, Hull Speedway... and I’ve also
spent many an evening at the Newcastle, Birmingham, Rye House and Cradley
Heath tracks while living near those at various times in the past.
Fun times. Sadly, most of the tracks near me are now defunct! My local is now
Scunthorpe Speedway, which is a great little track on the northern outskirts of
Scunthorpe... well worth a visit if you’ve never been before!
How to get to Scunthorpe Speedway
I’ve recently been playing around with a Garmin Sat Nav unit and
noticed that the postcode for Scunthorpe Speedway covers quite a large
area, so worked out the co-ordinates for the car park so it will go
directly to the right place... and added a little “S” icon
and appropriate mp3 sound clip from a recent meeting there! Works a
treat! I include them here for anyone else wanting to use them - and
a TomTom converted version too, though I haven't tested that. You can either download the infividual bits you want by right-clicking on the links and
saving, or there’s a zipped file containing all of them.
Download to your computer and upload to your Sat Nav GPS unit in whatever way
you usually use - I“m assuming you know how to do this (if not
there are lots of other websites explaining it so I won’t
duplicate that effort here)...
- Garmin GPI file - complete “.gpi” file containing the waypoint, sound clip and icon.
- Garmin CSV file - file containing the poi waypoint co-ordinates only.
- icon BMP file - small bitmap icon (letter “S” in a circle).
- sound clip MP3 file - sound clip (“You have one minute...”) in mp3 format, to play as a warning when you’re getting near!
- TomTom OV2 file - TomTom version of the CSV file (not tested yet).
- ZIPped file - ZIPped folder containing all of the above.
On my Garmin you can then go to Extras, Custom POI, and there it is!
If you find this useful, please drop me an
email to say so, and also let me know if you want any other speedway tracks adding and I'll have a go. :-)
