PRESS RELEASE 08.08.01
The Metric Martyrs Defence Fund
Announcing the launch of our collection box campaign
“GIVE A POUND TO SAVE OUR POUNDS”
To raise funds to enable the Metric Martyrs to mount a legal challenge by nature of an Appeal to the High Court in London (19th – 24th November 2001)
The consolidated appeal will include:STEVEN THOBURN (Sunderland greengrocer) - Found guilty of weighing bananas on imperial scales (April 9th 2001).COLIN HUNT (Hackney greengrocer) - Found guilty of pricing goods in pounds and of underselling arising from confusion in converting from imperial to metric (June 13th 2001).PETER COLLINS (Sutton greengrocer) - Lost his licence to trade because he only had imperial scales.JULIAN HARMAN (Greengrocer Camelford, Cornwall)JOHN DOVE (Fishmonger Camelford, Cornwall) - Facing identical charges of pricing goods by the pound. To be heard before Bodmin Magistrates 17th August 2001 at 10am.
The case will be expensive but must be brought in the interests of democracy and political accountability. These men must be supported so they face no financial consequence whatsoever for standing up for all our freedoms. Two of them now have a CRIMINAL RECORD because they served their customers in imperial measures. One has lost his licence to trade. Two are awaiting their fate.
It is our intention to get 100,000 collection boxes out around the country in pubs, clubs, shops, market stalls, offices and anywhere there is support. Various organisations are volunteering to help with the distribution.
Boxes can be ordered or donations made to:
