Books
50 Great Curries of India
Camellia Panjabi, Kyle Cathie Ltd., ISBN 1 85626 380 0 Amazon
has it.
A quick Google search reminded me that Steven Grace
wrote enthusiastically about the book last month in ukfdi. I second
his recommendation: the book is beautiful to look at, and the recipes
seem to be both authentic and approachable.
An Indian Housewife's Recipe Book
Laxmi Khurana.
A Taste of The Punjab
Lali Nayer
Classic Indian Cooking
Julie Sahni
Classic Indian Cuisine
Rosemary Moon ISBN 1-85833-377-6
Illustrated with just black and white drawings. Packed full of recipes, some
of which I've never seen elsewhere. I bought it discounted for £3.99 - not
sure what the 'real' price is.
The Practical Encyclopaedia of Indian Cooking,
Shehzad Husain & Rafi Fernandez ISBN 1-84038-547-2
A4 sized softback book with lavish photos, a good spice list and a large
selection of recipes (some original). My copy cost me IR£5.49.

Madhur Jaffrey, BBC books, £14.99 (but on offer at £11.99 on Amazon (Nov.2001))
ISBN 0-563-37707-7
Unusual (to us) regional recipes, lots of interesting reading and
scrumptious pictures, a comprehensive glossary.
"The Curry Book"
Laxmi Khurana, Asha Naran and Shelina Jetha, a paperback.
published by Clarion ISBN 1-899606-13-0
It is 288 pages crammed with recipes, loads and loads of dals and
vegetable dishes, starters, snacks, desserts.... no pictures, just
hundreds of recipes. The meat and chicken dishes are a fairly ordinary
selection but the rest of the book is brilliant.
The price? £1.99 !!!!!
Amazon
has it.
The Curry Secret
You can order it from the publishers directly. Post & Packing is 95 Pence.
I got it a couple of weeks ago, made the 'Chicken Curry' and it was close as
I've ever come to a proper Indian restaurant tasting curry. I've been
working through the rest of it ever since - so far, the Sheehk Kebabs are
the best thing! It's a small book - only £3.99, but worth every penny, IMHO.
I wouldn't say the recipes are simple, but they don't really require any
ingredients that are hard to get hold of - and they're more time consuming
than fiddly. However, if you follow the advice given in the book, and
pre-cook a batch of sauce and freeze it, the cooking time is vastly reduced
on future occasions. The recipes are in no way 'authentic Indian cookery -
they're Indian *restaurant* cookery - a different animal entirely. If you're
seeking Indian food as it is eaten in India, don't bother with this book,
but if you want to recreate your favourite curry from the local Indian
takeaway - this is for you!
