These pages contain two collections of photographs, giving us a glimpse of the world that our grandparents and great grandparents knew.
The first is a collection of photographs taken during the First World War. Many of these photographs were taken by one of my great uncles, a keen amateur photographer who went on to carry out aerial reconnaissance with the Royal Flying Corp. There are also photographs taken in Pforzheim, a German prisoner of war establishment for British and allied officers. My grandfather spent the final 9 months of the war there.
These pages also include a collection of photographs which must have been acquired from German soldiers, and which were retained by another of my great uncles after they were sent to him to be assessed. In 2001 I was able to add another page to this collection. The photographs on the new page were provided by Roland Fogt, and show his grandfather, Wilhelm Hoeffgen, and his grandfather's older brother, Karl. My thanks to Roland for letting me display his photographs on this website.
The second is a collection of photographs taken in China at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. These photographs were taken by my partner Chris Bourne's great grandfather, who was a newspaper editor in Shanghai at that time. They provide a fascinating glimpse of people's lives in pre-revolutionary, Imperial China.
The photographs relating to the Hoeffgen brothers belong to Roland Fogt. You are welcome to copy and use them for educational and other non-commercial purposes (please email Roland to let him know if you do). For any other proposed use of these photographs, please contact Roland at GermanPostcards@aol.com to discuss.
All of the other WW1 photographs belong to my mother, Mrs J Smillie. You are welcome to copy and use them for educational and other non-commercial purposes (we'd love to know about it if you do). For any other proposed use of these photographs, please contact me at dms@zetnet.co.uk to discuss.
The photographs of China belong to Mrs A Bourne. You are welcome to copy and use these photographs for educational and other non-commercial purposes (we'd love to know about it if you do). For any other proposed use of these photographs, please contact Chris Bourne at cfpb@borealis.gi to discuss.
