The following text was transcribed from some hand-written notes.
"At the close of his sermon last Sunday evening Principal MacGregor referred to Mr Smith's death in a very feeling manner.
'He has been called away as a stalk of corn fully ripe.'
During his long life, found him on the side of righteousness - a man of strong convictions ready to express & defend them. His ??? was of the highest & best. He lived for the good of men - while others go on well for a season & in later life fall away he remained steadfast & immovable.
On the side of temperance his testimony was of the clearest & most consistent order. He lived what he taught.
We hope that many will arise to follow in his steps & show by their manly self-restraint what a noble influence the gospel exacts on human character. Here was a man of whom the godless could never make sport.
His funeral called out the best men in our town & as we followed his body to the grave all shops were closed & every house showed marks of silent respect. The community is now the poorer because he is no longer here, yet 'he being dead yet speaketh'."
