DORNOCH | Cathedral dating from 1224 ( burned down in
1570 by John, Master of Caithness Cathedral later rebuilt in honour of the 1st Duke of Sutherland whose monument is seen as a conspicuous object from the adjoining counties and the opposite shores of the Moray Firth) Memorials to the first Duke and his wife, said to have been poisoned, are in Dornoch Cathedral but they were actually buried in Edinburgh Royal Dornoch Golf Course. Eighteen holes over 6514 yards. Web Site. Dornoch was the county town before being merged into Highland Region |
FORESTRY COMMISSION | Everyone is invited to enjoy the many facilities in Dornoch Forest District. There are a range of walks, cycle trails, orienteering courses and a fitness trail. For further information tel.: 01862 810359 |
GOLSPIE | The monument is to the Second Marquess of
Stafford who was rewarded by King William IV by having a dukedom conferred to him
and the name taken by him was the same as that of the county where his name was cursed. (
Sutherland) The monument to The First Duke of Sutherland , and two other monuments in England, was erected on the top of Beinn a' Bhragaid in 1834 by public subscription of "the grateful and mourning tenantry", to remind us of the Highland Clearances when Cheviot sheep became more profitable than men, between 1782-1820. There were other later Clearances between 1840 and 1854. |
Despite several attempts to have the Statue removed, the local populace, and expatriates all over the world appear to regard their monument to "The Mannie" as being vital to the local tourist industry. There is, however, much controversy about whether or not the monument should be allowed to stay.
BRORA | Where they play a round of golf in the summer
starting at midnight. The rounds include much horseplay, or so I'm told. The Clynelish
Distillery, Sutherland's only malt whisky distillery, is just north of the town. Visitors who go on the guided tours are rewarded with "A Dram" |
HELMSDALE | The Helmsdale river is reputed to have the best salmon fishing river in Scotland running westwards up the Strath of Kildonan |
Suisgill and other burns were popular in the late 1860's when they became the scene of gold panning. Not much luck myself!
OLD VILLAGE OF BADBAE | Memorial to a family of people (Sutherland's), not
known to be related to the Duke and his Wife, who suffered hardship in the last
century, before going off to New Zealand to live in 1911. Fancy tethering your children, never mind the cattle, to ropes lest they be blown off the cliff tops. Monument and information notices. |
BETTYHILL | Crofting centre and resort |
TONGUE | Village has gabled church with a boxed wooden gallery. |
DURNESS | Crofting village and the nearby "Smoo (limestone) Caves" |
