St. Ninians Isle!
Well, actually the mainland from St.Ninian's Isle.
St.Ninian's Isle is connected to the mainland by the finest example of a sand tombolo in Europe. St. Ninian's Isle is over one mile long. The isle has noboby living on it and there are no intact buildings - only ruins remain. The beach is one of the main tourist attractions in the South End.
An amazing collection of treasure was found on the isle among the ruins of an old kirk. The treasures that were found were all silver apart from the right half of a lower jaw bone. The rest of the objects were 7 silver bowls, a silver hanging-bowl, a silver spoon, a silver stemmed object, a silver gilt pommer, 3 silver gilt object of truncated spherical form, 9 silver gilt penannular brooches and a silver penannular brooch. This was all uncovered by a lucky schoolboy in 1958!
