Mousa is a small island about 1 mile east of Cunningsburgh. It is roughly 1.5 miles long. The broch (shown above) is one of the most complete examples in Scotland which stands at 13.5 metres high and has a diameter of 15 metres. It is an impressive Iron age monument which you can actually go inside. The walls are very thick and contain a stair case which you can ascend to the top of the broch. In the summer, at night, the broch is used by birds (Stormy Petrels) . This is popular with tourists - a boat service makes 'night runs' to Mousa for this purpose.
