By Air:
- Flights into Shetland's
Sumburgh Airport are available from many British Mainland airports,
via Aberdeen. From Sumburgh it will probably be necessary to hire a
car and travel on overland to Unst, as Ordale Airport (near Baltasound,
on Unst) is now closed.
- When booking air
travel, it is wise to also obtain information from a local Shetland
travel agent such as Shetland
Travelscope; their familiarity with the route can only be to
your advantage. They are fully aware of the complex pricing structures
on these routes, and can often obtain cheaper fares than other travel
agents for the same flights.
By Sea:
- Northlink
Ferries operate the daily (overnight) Ro-Ro ferry service from
Aberdeen, direct to Lerwick or via Orkney. Smyril
Line also connects Shetland (via Lerwick) with Scandinavia,
the Faroe Islands and Iceland.
Getting about
in Shetland:
- Car hire is available
from Lerwick companies such as Bolt's
and Star
Rent-A-Car, and may also be available from P & T Coaches
at Baltasound on Unst.
- Travel from the
Shetland Mainland to Unst is straightforward, with frequent inexpensive
Ro-Ro ferries operating between the islands. Timetables for these services
are available from the Shetland Tourist Information office in Market
Square, Lerwick (tel: 01595-693434), and direct online from the Shetland
Islands' Ferries webpage.
- Guided tours of
Unst can be booked with Qualified Shetland Tour Guide Sarah McBurnie
at See Shetland
Tours; she can be contacted either through her webpage link,
or through the Shetland Tourist Information office in Market Square
(tel: 01595-693434).
- Other Mainland
companies such as Leask's
also offer coach tours of the islands.
- There are rural
bus services (including a service between Sumburgh Airport and Lerwick)
and a daily bus service between Lerwick and Unst. Click here
for up-to-date public transport timetables.
- Shetland also
has many taxi services.
